3.1.x Jailbreak Part II

With huge thanks to kdc for creating the original and thanks also to everyone who contributed, the time has come for Part II of this thread since we've hit that 1000 post mark that can slow forum performance.

Old thread is here: http://www.avforums.com/forums/iphon...jailbreak.html

Re: 3.1.x Jailbreak Part II

Can we assume for a minute that i never went to school (feel like that after reading about 200 posts of thread 1!)
I have a 3gs on O2 and all i want to do is jailbreak. I have version 3.1.2 (7D11) Im staying with O2 so dont need to unlock (Is that correct?) What i do need to do is backup everything in itunes first then,

first i looked at
Firmware 3.1.2 Custom IPSW Files - SiNfuL iPhone
Telling me to download a custom IPSW (4 zip files)?
but then in your other thread i found
this link
http://dailymobile.se/2009/10/12/bla...-iphone-3g3gs-
and-ipod-touch-using-blackra1n/

which says just to download blackra1n.

also do i need to worry about modem firmware? mine says 05.11.07 ?

Many many thanks!!

Mark

job done! Yes was easy!!

Thanks.
Am i right in thinking that if i make a new backup/sync now that it will wipe over the last one? So i should save the folder that the original backup was in? Or am i being too paranoid!

LOL
I did this very search earlier today --- the forum search ignores the "9", and therefore returns every instance of iTunes. I gave up and decided to stay on 8.2... but this helps me

Same here and none of the JB techniques work.

Re: 3.1.x Jailbreak Part II

I am waiting on my iPhone 3G from ebay. The firmware version is 3.0 (Build 7A341) and the baseband is 04.26.08.

I want to jailbreak and unlock it but also have the latest available firmware on it.

I have seen a guide HERE which will work with the latest 3.1.2 firmware, the 05.11.07 baseband. I want to know if my plan is right. Can somebody confirm please?

My plan is:

* Update to latest 3.1.2 firmware via iTunes
* Jailbreak using Blackra1n
* Unlock using Blacksn0w

Am I right here or am I completely wrong? Will the update via iTunes to 3.1.2 change my baseband to 05.11.07?

I have done this, but remeber that the Jailbreak will be tethered so if you have to power off the phone or the battery runs out you will have to use blackrain again

Really? Do you have a 3G or 3GS?

I thought the tethered thing was only applicable to the 3GS?

Just spent the last 2 hrs searching for an answer...

Everywhere seems to suggest that by updating to 3.1.2 and jailbreaking that you cannot unlock the phone. Is this correct? Also, I won't have to connect to pc everytime I restart will I?

No, you'll be fine. The 'tethered' jailbreak only applies to the new 3GS iPhone that come with the new bootrom. You're 3G phone won't have this new bootroom, so you'll be safe to upgrade to 3.1.2 and jailbreak/unlock with blacksn0w.

The 3.1.2 stuff was the case for ages until blackra1n was released last week, so there's lots of old info out there. Every iPhone can now be unlocked, a few very new ones have to be tethered.

Re: 3.1.x Jailbreak Part II

If you upgrade it too 3.1.2 and use a custom firmware like sinfulphone 3.2.1 then install blacksn0w through cydia you wont have a problem turning your phone off or letting it go flat, I performed this on a 3 week old 5.11 baseband phone for my mate and he has no problems

Re: 3.1.x Jailbreak Part II

I've just got my first iphone (it's brilliant). I unfortunately used Blackra1n to jailbreak it without reading the bit about the latest version being tethered once it was done. Is there anyway of changing this back, or is there likely to be some update of Blackra1n to correct this? I'm a complete novice where the iphone is concerned so need all the help I can get!

Does anyone know a way of identifying what 3GS have the newer bootrom that requires tethering if you turned it off totally?

Re: 3.1.x Jailbreak Part II

It seems...

Apple changed part of the boot code so newer phones need to be 'tethered' if you ever turn them off to be unlocked again.
To work out if this applies to you look up your serial number, the first 5 numbers of your serial will tell you if you have the old or new Bootroom.
xxx37 or less means your iPhone is jailbreak friendly. Anything that goes xxx38 to xxx40 has a chance of having the new bootrom. Anything xxx41 and over has the new Bootrom.

Re: 3.1.x Jailbreak Part II

Just to add to this - My sister, Her Husband, and his sister all got the new 16GB 3GS from Orange last week.

The Husband got his in the morning, and the other two got theirs very late in the evening.

Upshot - JB'd all three easily. However only The Husbands one can reboot without having to re-JB i.e. he can restart, reboot without the phone going into recovery mode. The other two are not so fortunate and I have to re-run blackra1n everytime they reboot their phone.

In short he was lucky that he got a phone from a batch which had the older bootrom - the other two have the newer ones. No Biggie - takes a few seconds to fix...

NOTE: To all those who can only do a tethered JB with blackra1n - remember you DON'T have to do a full restore again. As soon as it goes into recovery mode for whatever reason just rerun blackra1n again and everything is gravy...

I'm correct in thinking that if you JB a new 3GS iphone using PwnageTool on a Mac and the iphone has the lastest bootroms etc. You don't need to run any apps should you need to shut it down or the power runs out???
