Removing winterboard

3G, v3.01
I have winterboard installed but don't use themes and I've never downloaded any additional themes. The only items I have enabled in winterboard are

WeatherIcon - TICK (for LockInfo WeatherIcon plugin to give the cloud icons)
User Wallpaper.

WIll I be OK to uninstall winterboard. I'd like to know if my phone's any quicker without it. If so how do I go about uninstalling.

I have SBSettings and I have the following listed in SBSettings mobile substrates

20secLockScreen
FiveIconDock
LockInfo
PreferenceLoader - no idea what this is or what installed it ?
WeatherIcon
Winterboard
libhide

The warning at the top of the substrates page indicates that if winterboard is disabled it's possible the phone will crash, but could I untick everything in winterboard and disable it and reboot to check if having winterboard does make any speed difference, but without fully uninstalling it.

Does winterboard own or control anything else which would cause the phone to crash if it was uninstalled.

I am fine using SSH if its needed to do the winterboard uninstall.
