Today 11/3/09 is a sn0w day. School is officially cancelled, and all your iPhones will be unlocked. Remember getting those calls?
At Noon EST, I will be making it sn0w, and I'm looking to see "#blacksn0w" trending. blacksn0w is the unlock for the latest 05.11.07 baseband, and will also enable official tethering. blackra1n, a jailbreak for 3.1.2, has been updated to RC3, with hacktivation support, 15 second speed improvement, Tiger+PPC support, and installation of the latest blackra1n.app. Here is how getting yourself some sn0w and ra1n will work.
If you are a loyal blackra1n user who kept the blackra1n.app on your iPhone, run it. You will see Icy replaced by an option "ra1n". Install this to upgrade your app. After upgrading, run blackra1n.app again. You will see "sn0w". Install this, and enjoy your unlocked iPhone.
If you are new to the scene, just looking for an unlock, finally ready to upgrade to 3.1.2 and the accompanying baseband, willing to restore for the latest and greatest, or stuck on the "Connect to iTunes" screen, you are in luck. Jailbreaking and unlocking have never been easier. Go to blackra1n.com, click on the logo corresponding to your operating system, run the app, and click "make it ra1n". When your phone reboots, you'll see blackra1n.app. Run this, install blacksn0w, and enjoy your unlocked iPhone.
If you jailbroke using pwnage or deleted your blackra1n.app, you are in luck too. Sometime later in the sn0wday, blacksn0w will be added to Cydia, and instructions will be posted here.
If you are on a 2G iPhone, blacksn0w isn't an option for you. But BootNeuter is, a completely free permanent unlock for your 2G. Of course, blackra1n will work great, and even hacktivate for you.
If you have been getting 404 errors when downloading from blackra1n.com, first off, be sure you use the links at blackra1n.com If you are, something is blocking your http referrer.
Thanks to ih8sn0w for bringing the at+xemn command to my attention. This is the injection vector used to get code running on the baseband. One of these days I will write a technical post about how it works.
Also, a note. This may be the best iPhone users ever have it. Be sure, if you have a 3GS or iPod Touch 3, to use Cydia's "On File" or Firmware Umbrella in order to be able to restore to 3.1.2 in the future. And as always, the baseband cannot be downgraded, so be *super* careful with updates if you need the unlock.
Check back here at Noon EST for the official launch announcement
coming soon INFO removed and replaced with the above

Step 1 If you have already done this go to step 2
When you have jailbroken your iphone lauch cyida and you should see a section that says MAKE MY LIFE EASIER. click it. Cydia will then back up TWO FILES. These files and the following step (below) will make sure you can always come back to 3.1+. Allowing you to JAILBREAK and UNLOCK your iphone.
The next step is to have ITUNES point all request for a signature to cydia's server NOT APPLES. cydia's server will then search for your TWO FILES and then sign your firmware.
read below on how and why in more detail
step 2(If you don't. step 1 would of been pointless)
Quote:
I have constructed a server that duplicates the functionality exposed by Apple's signature server, except using "on file" results rather than live requests.
All we need, then, is to make iTunes use it. Luckily, most operating systems also have the ability to locally define bypasses on specific hostnames through a file called hosts. Using this, we can redirect requests to Apple's signature server to Cydia.
So, open the file C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts (Windows) or /etc/hosts (Mac OS X) and add the following entry to the bottom of the file.
74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com
Now, when iTunes thinks it is talking to Apple, it is talking to Cydia instead. Doing this will allow iTunes to access signatures already stored by Cydia's "on file" feature.
This server will also act as a cache for any SHSH blobs it hasn't seen, acting as an intermediary to Apple's server. This effectively registers your device with the "on file" mechanism, which means you can now enjoy the protections of being able to downgrade your firmware in the future even if you aren't jailbroken.
Would you guys suggest jailbreaking now and waiting until blacksn0w is available from cydia or would you advise to wait until both parts are ready?
I doubt it would make any difference.
If the unlock follows the previous patterns it's just a package which you download through Cydia after you have jailbroken, so whether you jailbreak now or later I it should make no difference at all. I doubt the jailbreak software will change at all for BlackSn0w as they are two distinct pieces of software each working on a different area of the phone's firmware. The only link being that you need to have a jailbroken phone to run the unlock as it's not apple signed software.
So basically, working on the assumption i jailbreak tonight, i should just be able to keep refreshing my cydia sources on a daily basis and eventually blacksn0w will apprear as a new package then i simply download the and install then insert my T-mobile sim and im away????
I think you have to add Geohot's repository to see his additions to cydia. I've seen the address somewhere on these forums but i don't know where. I'm sure some kind person will point you in the right direction or you could try the search function
First off, Jody Sanders, I am declining your $10,000. Why? Because you, and the rest of the iPhone unlock sites out there are scum. You make money selling freeware; that's not cool, and I am in no way going to legitimize it.
Seriously, the people who really lose here are the customers. These sites are full of blatant lies, claiming to have unlocks for 05.11.07 People buy them, and are told the unlock is in development, and the release date is unknown. Imagine you bought a cup of coffee and were told it's in development? Recently, many of these sites sent out e-mails saying they made major breakthroughs and the unlock will be ready 11/04/09. Coincidence that that's the release date of blacksn0w?
I'm not going to post all these scam sites here, as I don't want to give them the pagerank boost. Rather I'll give you a whitelist, two people make unlocks, me and the dev team. Every iPhone unlock site you see out there is selling our stuff, repackaged in some form or another. Same goes for jailbreaks, although ih8sn0w and chronicdev are legit. Notice what all the legit ones have in common? They are free.
Now despite rumors of the ferocity of my legal team, they actually are pretty poor lawyers. And the scum who run these websites are the type who get off on legal battles. So we have to fight them in another way, and I'm asking for everyones help on this. Our weapon is information. Get the truth out, that all iPhone unlocks and jailbreaks are free, and if you are buying something, you aren't getting anything a simple google search couldn't get you, and are probably funding someones crack habit.
This is the first time I have tried to make something simple for the end users, and it enrages me to see people selling it. Let's shut all these assholes down, and tell the iPhone owning world all they need is at blackra1n.com, including blacksn0w instructions on it's release date, 11/04/09(yes, will support hacktivation). You do your part, and I'll do mine making things as simple, reliable, and straightforward as possible.

I am sure the info will appear on AVF on or around the 4th giving you details of any additional sources you need to add into Cydia to get blacksn0w - if the source is not already in Cydia.
iClarified will probably also have a tutorial very shortly after the release too. The are very easy to follow. iClarified - Tutorials - iPhone
I suspect the Cydia source server will be quite busy for a few days which may make getting blacksn0w difficult at first.

Does this mean you can connect a v3.0 iPhone to iTunes, happily click the upgrade to 3.1.2 'nag' and upgrade your phone with the official iTunes 3.1.2 firmware includiung baseband.
Then just simply download and run blackra1n followed by BlackSn0w.
All the info to date warns you have to have modified version of 3.1.2 (with baseband removed) for BlackSn0w I'm assuming this is all redundant now that the 5.11.07 baseband can be unlocked ?

That is my understanding as well so you are either correct or we are both confused !

I'll second that!!!
I updated my 3G last night to firmware 3.1.2 with the 05 baseband. Had no problems jailbreaking it so hopefully i am just waiting to open the blackra1n app on my phone, downloading the ra1n app, then going back into blackra1n app to hopefully see blacksn0w in place of the old "icy" and then touch wood yet again my T-Mobile sim should go straight in and im away!

YES this is the point of BLACKSN0W it unlocks the new base band within 3.1+ which is 5.11.07
what I would advice you do is add cydia server to your itunes so you will always be able to go back to 3.1+ with the 5.11.07 base band.
this will only work if cydia says it has your file backed up (via make my life easier)
