Buy an Iphone Today possible to unlock?

Hiya

Just a question i seem to keep getting quite confused about unlocking phones so bought my old one unlocked from a stall on the market.
I lost that phone at the weekend and so am loking to get another and thought i may aswell look at getting a 3GS one but finding one unlocked is quite tricky i'm finding without paying through the roof on Ebay or various websites like Play etc.
I get confused with all the different Firmware versions and what can and cannot be unlocked.
I know there are a lot of guides available online these days so my question is that if i was to buy a brand new 3GS from the Apple shop would it be a firmware version that is able to be unlocked or am i likely to be stuck?

Cheers

If you bought one from Apple/O2/CPW new, the chances are you will get one with a modem firmware which isn't unlockable (05.11.07 I believe).

You will probably also get one with an updated bootroom (iBoot-359.3.2) which can only be tethered jailbroken.
