Re: 3gs, 3.1, 05.11.07......

If it's an official apple install of 3.1 then no it can be jailbroken (using mac only and a custom fimware) but can't be unlocked. It's not firmware version 3.1 that's the problem, it's the baseband firmware. iPhone firmware comes in 2 bits. The bit that runs the apps and the bit that does the telecoms bit. They have managed to hack the 3.1 main firmware that runs the apps meaning jailbrake is possible, but they haven't hacked the new baseband firmware which is why unlock is not possible. When you update using a custom version of 3.1 to jailbreak it is modified to not update the baseband. When you update through iTunes with the official 3.1 it does update the baseband

So it's not the main firmware version that you need to check it's the baseband version. Hope that makes sense.

However, it's been mentioned on here that O2 may be offering unlock when other carriers begin to offer iPhone so fingers crossed we may not need third party unlock tools for long

Re: 3gs, 3.1, 05.11.07......

I dont see why not - you bought the handset so I cant see any reason why they could refuse. The only reason O2 and Apple wouldnt unlock previously is that they had an exclusivity deal between them to ensure apple only sold iPhone for O2 in UK.

From next month you could walk into an apple store and say I want a PAYG handset. O2, Voda, Orange or T-Mobile sir. The whole point of PAYG is that you aren't tied into a contract and each carrier is forever trying to convince you to buy a SIM off them to put in your existing handset. So assuming you said Voda and got an iPhone on Voda then decided to switch what right would they have for refusing unlocking. You havent bought the iPhone from Voda, you've bought it from Apple. Apple have no exclusivity deal which contractually stops them from unlocking. I could maybe see that they would only relock to another official supplier - but can also see that might get a real pain in the arse for them if people constantly switch on PAYG to get different web access offers.

No reason not to, as you would have paid in full for the phone. The CEO dude said that if any one finished the contract OR will still honour the rest of it they will unlock for them as they have paid for the phone.

see the topic that i started with the link to the times news artical whre peole were asking the boss this and more questions.

bare in mind that the pay and go phones have been subsidised by o2, so they wont just unlock it right after youve bought it.

I doubt they have been subsidised. At £440 a pop for a 3GS does not look like any kind of subsidy from me..!

besides thats near the same price as many other countries who sell unlocked phones.

The 3GS is 575 euros in belgium...that's about £520. It's a good bit of difference.

Not Really,

You see the £520 is because the POUND IS LOW. The price of iphone at 575 EURO's has always been 575 Euros. when the POUND was worth 1.5 EURO's at that time the same IPHONE was costing £380 POUNDS, far cry from the £440 we we are expecting to pay.

So the COST of BUYING iphones abroad now is more due to the weaker pounder. Regardless its probably better to buy in UK for warranty reasons, currently cheaper (assuming it becomes available unlocked).

I have a feeling you are right thought, i think Apply will sell PAYG locked and unlocked at 2 different prices..!

Re: 3gs, 3.1, 05.11.07......

okay, to put it another way,

a 32gb unlocked iphone 3GS from play.com is 879.99 , the same phone on pay as you go is 538.

I know the comparrison is not strictly accurate due to it being imported but have a look at any sim free unlocked phone in comparison to its pay as you go cousin.

Pay as you go phones ARE subsidised.

you will have to have had the phone active on their network for a certain amount of time before they will unlock it.
