Way to use custom tones for sms etc?

I have recently jailbroken and I'm looking for an app, preferably free, to change sms tones etc. I've come accross a good app called tonefx which is $4.99 on cydia and I'll probably buy it unless anyone knows of a free equivalent?

I use ToneFXs, it's very good.

Can change nearly all the iPhone's sounds on it.

You can do it without an app using SSH if you are a bit techie. Have a search on youtube there's a tutorial.

Re: Way to use custom tones for sms etc?

For the love of God, please dont pay for something you can easily do for free :

1. Choose a favorite MP3 files and cut out some seconds (2-3 seconds should be enough)
2. Now import this MP3 in your iTunes and convert it to a AIFF file
3. Copy this new created AIFF file on your desktop
If you don’t find this file, look at the properties of the file in iTunes – there should be the path where it’s located on your harddrive.
4. Now change the ending *.aif in *.caf
5. Now connect via SCP on your iPhone (Mac: Cyberduck, Win: WinSCP)
6. Go to “/System/Library/Audio/UISounds”
7. Here you can change one or all of the default sms tones.
But create first a backup of the file which you’ll replace!
e.g. rename “sms-received6.caf” in “sms-received_6.caf” and then rename and copy your new file to “sms-received_6.caf”.

And here is which file corresponds to which name:

sms-received1.caf -> Tri-tone
sms-received2.caf -> Chime
sms-received3.caf -> Glass
sms-received4.caf -> Horn
sms-received5.caf -> Bell
sms-received6.caf -> Electronic

I've tried that method after following a guide on youtube but I never see the system folder? I have ' hide protected operating system files ' unchecked in folder options but I still can't see the system folder. What am I doing wrong?

Re: Way to use custom tones for sms etc?

You mean the “/System/Library/Audio/UISounds" on the iPhone ?

If you are using WinSCP to connect to the phone it defaults to a lower level folder when you start it. You need to keep going back up the folders until you get to the 'root' folder on the phone (the equivalent to C:\ on your PC) then navigate back down the path above.

Make sure you take a copy of the existing files before replacing them. Sometimes the phone needs a respring to play the new sms tone - I think it must cache them in memory?

BTW: There are loads of sms tones in mp3 format here (as well as ringtones) all freeeeee....
http://www.zedge.net/ringtones/0/nok...ones/20-4-1-1/

Just need converting to AIFF and renaming to .caf as described.

When you run WinSCP in the left pane click on root and then use the right pane to navigate to "/System/Library/Audio/UISounds"

Just done it now and its there.

Many thanks for that funkyspider - I'm loving the Mother-in-Law tone, they call it 'Horror Alert'!

Thanks to hot-fuzz as well for taking the time to help.
