have heard some people say it messes up your iphone so just wanted to make sure it was ok to use. There are also apparently other apps which do exactly the same thing....would they be a better option?

It works fine.

Go into the options and turn the badge on (and use the extra setting to turn the badge off for official apps that have background support - iPod, safari etc.)
