Can an iphone ever be used as a modem?

I am considering an iphone and although I can browse on the iphone itself there may be times when I want to quickly pick up email on my laptop, either osx or vista. Is it possible to use th iphone as a modem, I don't think it is using the std iphone contract, what about using a simplicity sim?

Is it a hardware restriction or just t&cs thing? Is there any actual s/w which would know how to talk to the iphone as a modem?

It would be very light data usage so unlikely to trigger any alarms.

Do you know if it is straight forward to connect to exchange through outlook web access? I have searched and find people with problems but not sure if this is a common problem or not.

ALL i did ws set my pop and smtp and user and pass and its fine
