Buying a 3GS and transferring from a 2G

Hello,

I'm buying a 3GS and giving my wife my old 2G. I'm on a simplicity contract.
Can we buy the new 3GS and swap SIM cards so I have the 3GS with a simplicity contract?
Also, what's the procedure for telling iTunes the 3GS is now my phone? Can I just restore the new phone from the old backup?

Thanks for any help. And apologies if this has been answered before, but I couldn't find it if it has

EDIT: Oh, and I assume this is a terrible time to buy - are the prices likely to drop much in the next few weeks?

Yeah you can simply backup your old 2G phone then remove the SIM and put it in your new 3GS and hook it up to iTunes and set it up using a restore of your 2G backup - should bring everything along with it that you had on the old phone. You can then just reset the 2G to factory defaults and set it up as a new phone using the SIM you got with the 3GS.

Nope Possibly in the new year, but only realistically when people stop wanting them. iPhone prices have really only gone up with each new model.
