Unlocking iPhone

Hi all,

I am looking to buy a used iPhone 3GS. Most of these are currently locked to O2.

What do I need to be aware of (or do) to unlock teh phone si I can use all its features (incl. 3G) on other networks.

Also, do you need a specific tariff on teh networks to be able to use all the features (other than 3G internet access) ?

Guilty, I was being lazy and hoped someone could summarise it for me without me having to assimilate the information from multiple posts
