Using the Iphone for a laptop internet connection & VPN

Hi folks,

I have an Iphone on a basic o2 contract and am looking for guidance on how to set it up with my laptop so I can use it as an internet connection and then log in to my work's VPN connection (preferably a free option so I don't have to pay o2 for the bolt on!!).

I havn't unlocked or "jailbreaked" the phone so other than the Apple updates, it is as it was out of the box.

I've had a good look on the internet and this forum for guidance as to how to do this but I am struggling to find assistance in how to do it from scratch. Can anyone provide this or tell me where I could find instructions on how to do it?

I'd think there would be a number of people looking for the same so if someone was to write a step by step guide, this could perhaps be posted as a sticky for all to see?
