Downloaded the update today for the Mercury browser and it seems much faster, the normal chequered patterning is hardly visible as it disappears as soon as you scroll down the page

Further to my post above i have noticed a strange thing, when looking at the classified section of the forums it initially shows a blank white page and you have to refresh the page then it shows properly, this only occurs in the classified section so anyone else notice this ?

Nope...

It could be a useragent issue. What have you set Mercury to 'identify browser as'? Have a play with another preset to see if that resolves it.

Thanks for the suggestion, i've just tried all the presets and its still the same.

Why would it only do it in the classified section ?

Why are you using a browser for the forums?
The app is much better with only a couple of features missing.

Anyone here using atomic web browser for iPhone or iPad ?

When on some forums like this one i can't make new threads as the box is like greyed out
Same goes for replying to topics, only way to post is in the quick reply box.

Anyone else found Atomic has been going down hill lately? I find I have most problems on the ipad, but its not as good as it was for iphone either. Sometimes it crashes when I'm just reading a loaded page. Also after the latest update, some pages are really jerky at scrolling, almost as if it can't cope. They worked fine before.

I've switched to Mercury and enjoying it so far. Just have to get used to the slightly different short cuts

YES. I have had a load of crashes. not sure why.
Im thinking of going back to Mercury, but as you say, its the getting used to something different all over again.

ARGH.
Just been using Mercury since my last post and im back with Atomic.
I just cant seem to work it as well. Its the small things that make Atomic better for me such as tabs being just big enough for me to use them better than Mercurys.

Again cant put my finger on it (literally) but Atomic for me is still the winner.

Edit.
Atomic is brilliant on the iphone, but since the update the iPad version keeps crashing.

I'm not quite sure whats happened to atomic and mercury lately. I'm finding both of them jerky when scrolling large complex pages and quite frustrating to use at times. Just re-downloaded Perfect which I had some time ago and so far at least, scrolling is smooth. It can be done so why can't atomic and mercury manage it?! Gonna use Perfect as my main browser for a few days and see how it goes...

It's true Opera Mini has just been updated, it runs smoothly but I think that most of the time the websites not ready for mobile are the real problem actually.

Opera mini is still pretty rubbish imo but at least its useable now. I see myself using it when abroad to save on roming data costs. What I find strange though is it is actually slower in general than using aromic, despite the compression they use. Clearly the server side rendering has enough of a delay that if you have a decent data connection, you are better off using a normal web broswer

Exactly the reason i have it....did a test a couple of years ago with the BBC Sport homepage. Loaded as normal in safari its over 700kb in size but loaded in Opera Mini with images turned off its about 17kb in size. Massive difference at £3 per Mb!!

Depends on what connection you use. Wifi or good 3G will be better with safari/etc because of the latency added by the server side compression. But over GPRS Opera mini kills Safari/etc.

very true but being on 3, I honestly can't remember the last time I didn't have a decent 3g signal therefore if anything I'm finding it is slower.

One interesting point though, certain large web pages (Runblogger | A Running Blog Providing Thoughts and Tips on Running, Exercise Science, and Living an Active Life is an example) are terrible on safari and jerky on 3rd party browsers on both the iiphone and ipad. But opera mini solves this problem immediately and is a joy to use. The pages scroll smoothly and with very little refresh required

I have also found Mercury to be juddery on scrolling since the last but one update. I've gone back to safari until this is sorted as even though it's a bit slower, no judderyness. I have emailed mercury about the juddering and hoped the last update may have resolved it but afraid not.

Also my comment re mercury and juddery is on the iPad, not tried on iPhone yet.

I've not really experienced the judder on the iPad 2 (probably owing to its dual core processing) which I have seen become more evident with the iPhone 4 in any of the browsers I own (opera excluded). The cynical part of me feels browsing performance is part of Apple's next big sell in for the iPhone 5 and that Apple are engineering areas where reviewers can favourably compare performance.

I just downloaded the new Dolphin Browser.

First impressions, great. Love the side bars for bookmarks.
And the quick launch sites are a good idea.

Worth a try, its FREE

EDIT : Love it, has become my browser of choice. Gestures are actually usable. Speed dials are helpful aswell. Just needs an ipad version.

I've found Atomic has been running a lot slower on my iPad. Used to run very fast but now it takes ages to load pages and crashes sometimes. Think I'll wait for the OS5 update and go to Safari as it'll have tabbed browsing (which is really the main thing I need).

Real shame - any other browsers which work how Atomic used to?

I agree, I'm going back to safari more and more after iOS 5 I might well ditch the alternative browsers alltogether (maybe keep mercury for hdmi out duties etc).

All non-safari browsers I have used seem to have the same problem for me - sometimes an image, other things or often whole page appear to have not loaded, but in fact they have it's just the browser does not update the screen. A quick pinch/zoom anywhere on the screen forces an redraw and update.

Anyone else find this?
