Question Is there a good app for "Tasks"?

Hi all,

As per my thread here, I'm thinking of getting SWMBO an iPhone for Xmas.

However, the one thing that the iPhone doesn't seem to do "out of the box" as it were is sync Tasks with Outlook (which her WinMo PDA does).

That's a really crucial thing for her to do as she syncs Contacts, Tasks and Calendar with her work laptop, so the iPhone is currently sitting at the 2 out of 3 stage.

Any thoughts?

Ta.

Not used it myself, but you can use ToDo to sync tasks with Outlook.

Can I synchronize Todo with Outlook?

With Appigo Sync for Windows, which is currently in public beta testing, you can now synchronize tasks between Todo and Outlook.

Does that help?

Thanks BTW guys.

Ok, a quick thread resurrection from me.

SWMBO's WinMo PDA is getting very creaky now, so it'll soon be time for a new phone.

The one thing that is crucial to her is Tasks as she uses it constantly via Outlook and attaches items to her tasks.

Is there anything out yet that would allow her to do this on an iPhone yet?

Having said that, she has her own domain which she uses for email only (no website, just swmbo@swmbo.com), so if that was added as an Exchange account, would that have any baring on Tasks?

Cheers all.

Toodledo is very good. It can sync with their website so you get your tasks on a pc as well as your phone.

Very handy.

In answer to your Exchange question. I have an Exchange account which I sync mail and tasks to/from. Works pretty well. They get put into Calendar, so you get alerts etc just as you do on a PC.

Appigo Todo pushed out a new big version today with multi-tasking support and a "host" of other bits and pieces. Not used it enough yet to see how big an improvement it is...
I think I read that their Outlook support is still based on the desktop intermediary approach unfortunately though.

I have my own email accounts (as does SWMBO) hosted by Google and I use the calendar and set reminders on my iPhone, which do flash up at the specified time (with a little "beep"), but SWMBO has a specific requirement for Tasks, as opposed to calendar reminders (I hope I've explained that clearly!).

I'll take a look at that, thanks.

[Edit] - Even something that runs on her PC and syncs to her Google hosted email account would do (much in the same way that Google sync does, but that only does calendar entries/mail/contacts-which the iPhone can do "over the air" anyway!).

Oops yes, I totally missed that, I get what you mean entirely - sorry, hadn't had morning Coffee! :-)

Well it seems like Appigo Todo would work, using Appigo Sync (which is free) as the PC tool to push out the tasks to the iPhone.

Haven't tried it though as Todo can only sync with one source and I use it with Toodledo, but I find their app fairly well polished, so provided the same level of polish on the PC it should be ok!

Hi all,

Still haven't resolved this yet.

So....

SWMBO has agreed that her creaking WinMo PDA has to go and we had a chat last night about what she wants/needs to be able to do.

Here's the details.

She has her own domain (just for email-no website) which is hosted by Google, so when she's not at home on her laptop, she can use the web interface for email and calendar.

Tasks-the Google mail web interface does have a Tasks section, but it doesn't allow the adding of attachments for reference and this is currently something she does in Outlook-she creates a task and attaches something to it (maybe a spreadsheet or a Word doc) for reference when the task is due.

Can she run Outlook to directly use her Google mail calendar (i.e not the standard Outlook (local) calendar, or would it just be simpler to use Outlook and run Google Sync to sync her Outlook calendar and Contacts to her Google mail account?

If so, here's my thinking:
  • Get her an iPhone.
  • Set up her email and calendar on the iPhone as an Exchange account.
  • Use Outlook for Tasks, so that she can continue to add attachments to them.
  • Use Outlook for Google mail and run Google Sync on her laptop to sync Calendar and Contacts.

Does that sound feasible?

Cheers.

[Edit] - I've just realised that she still won't get Tasks on the iPhone, it will be laptop only so I'll have to ask her if she could live with having the actual Tasks on the phone (maybe via Toodledo or a similar app) without the attachments.

Or am I asking for a device to do too much?

Question

I've just thought of something else.

On her laptop, she has lots of personal email folders in Outlook.

Is there a way to get this replicated to her Google email account, so that the same folders/mails are present there?

I just had a quick play around, because Toodledo does support File Attachments to tasks - but neither the Toodledo iPhone app, or Appigo ToDo seem to support them at the moment.

I can't tell that for sure as I think you need a ProPlus Toodledo account to use attachments and I just have a Pro account - but I can't see any places in either app where you could do it.

I would imagine it is on their list of things to add, as it is one of the paid-for options they want to push it as much as possible, no idea when though.
