Re: RedLaser - Product scanner

They didn't sell out, it was always a paid app on the App Store. They got frustrated by the length of time Apple took to approve a significant upgrade, so they put it on Cydia in the mean time.

It was a remarkably generous thing for the developers to do, really.

Actually i find it to be very good, but it does depend on the types of things you are looking for. Great for electrical items, CD's and books etc - stuff thats sold online a lot.

Tried it in Staples the other day. They had a printer in there for £280. Redlaser found it at a few online retailers at £130. The salesman was speechless

IMO its a brilliant app.

I agree - I like browsing books in Waterstones so it's handy to be able to use this to see what Amazon are charging for it to decide whether to impulse buy it there or not. Good little app.

Re: RedLaser - Product scanner

I tried it on some PS3 and Wii games in Game the other day. Also tried some deodorant, aftershave, books, drinks etc
Some of them came back with minimum information such as what company produced the item (ie Fruit Shoot made by Robinsons) but it couldn't find any prices.
The only thing that has worked so far is one Wii game.

I just picked 3 PS3 games off my shelf at random (Killzone 2, Little Big Planet, Pro Evo 2008) and all 3 returned lots of price results. Have you tried updating perhaps? I am running v2.2.0

Can you be more specific? Since the update a couple of weeks ago, pic2shop has picked up everything I have scanned. The only downside is that it only shows prices on Amazon at the moment but I find that a good enough guide to Internet price vs. store price.

Re: RedLaser - Product scanner

Its huge flaw is that when you're out and about you can just search online for anything using your iPhone's internet browser. Why use redlaser just so you can faff about trying to scan a barcode and search a limited selection of sites?

I just don't think it has a point

It's really quick to use - you can open it and scan a bar code in under 5 seconds...with my big clumsy fingers, opening Safari and searching takes much longer! It returns results quickly too, faster than a webpage takes to load in Safari. If you're looking at a few products (e.g. CDs in HMV or books in Waterstones), those timesavings can add up.

Plus it's only £1.19 and the little vibrate you get when it locks and reads the barcode is addictive

You'd look a moron sat in store searching Safari for 5/10 minutes checking prices - this app does it in seconds and is just fantastic. I'll be recommending it to everyone with iPhones!

this is a great little app. Any sign of more sites being added to the search?
Was really funny being in Currys and the guy telling me what great price the vacuum cleaner was and i scanned the bar code and told him i could get it £80 cheaper!

very very easy to use and it stores your searhces. whats not to like.

One of the best apps for the iphone IMO.

I don't have RedLaser but do have the free Pic2Shop. To be honest, I would be grateful if someone could explain the difference between the two.

I find Pic2Shop picks up the barcodes fine and although it only has Amazon, it does provide a link to the Google Product search page for the item which has lots of price compasrisons.

Given that, how can RedLaser be better ?

After looking at many reviews, I downloaded this today.

And I am very happy with it.

Much better than others I have tried.

DO NOT DOWNLOAD THE UPDATE!!!!

Just read that red laser has got rid of amazon as its main search engine and replaced it with TheFind. Reviews have plummeted and there are several posts over at the red laser forum asking for a fix as it is now next to useless in the UK.

I downloaded the new version to my itunes library (before i read the new reviews) but still have the original version on my iPhone. if i unselect the sync check box next to red laser in my library will it remove the app from my phone or just not sync the new version?? Basically im looking for a way to keep the version i have now!

It will just not sync - the version on your phone will remain. If you really want you can root around in the iTunes folder on your computer and find/delete the new version of RedLaser too, but just unticking the sync box should do.

Re: RedLaser - Product scanner

Latest news is that after getting lots of complaints and dropping to just 1 and a half star ratings, google is has been re-added as a search. So red laser is no longer useless on the UK but I'm still hoping amazon will also reappear!
