iOSMaps...total rubbish?

Hi

I believe iOsmaps is the only OS mapping software available for the iphone...however reading all the reviews in itunes people are not happy with it. I know its free but is it really worth downloading it? I guess it will never replace my Satmap GPS unit?

Cheers

Re: iOSMaps...total rubbish?

nope...

its rubbish...

"gridpoint" is a good app that will convert your gps co-ord into a OS grid reference, which is useful (to me anyway)

and

"trails" is a very good app that uses topographical maps and can track where you are ( I use it to record my mountain bike runs) good thing is you can pre-select an area and download the mapping info for it so if you are "off the grid" you can still use the maps.

Re: iOSMaps...total rubbish?

I used it for a bit and got the hump with all the blank pages as it uses a freeby OS version.

I've been using Motion-x for a while and love it, the lite version seems fully featured as well, it uses google maps and you can set it to cache the maps up to 250mb worth.

Re: iOSMaps...total rubbish?

motion x is good (the lite version) because its free..

I didnt like the interface though.. very cheap and tacky... but as its free try it out, trails has a lite version too so you can have a look before buying..

Re: iOSMaps...total rubbish?

Anyone here a fan of Memory Map?

I'm beta testing an app that displays MM .qct files on the iPhone :D
It does pretty much what you'd expect - allows you to browse the map, and tracks your position. It doesn't do anything fancy like routes or whatnot, but that's a purpose served by other products - this just allows you to see where you are on the map, and because the map is already on your phone, no data connection is required!

The developer is hoping to get it on the app store soon - I'm hoping that Apple and Memory Map don't put a block on it

Re: iOSMaps...total rubbish?

I used to love memory map on my ipaq with a bluetooth gps, I did make use of all the tracking it had though.

I did hunt around to see if it was on the iphone but found a post in their forum about it being developed on a different processor to what the iphone uses and where not looking to port it, bit short sighted in my opinion.

Re: iOSMaps...total rubbish?

Terribly short sighted. And even though they're obviously ignoring the iPhone market, their past track record at being incredibly restrictive on what you can do with their products (this is the company that refuses to let you use old maps in a new version of the software, they love to make you pay for the same thing twice!) I am fearful of whether this app will be allowed to exist in future

This is by far the most convenient way of getting OS maps on your iPhone I have seen, though there are others - one guy even managed to get the Windows Mobile version running by emulating the ARM processor(!), and it is possible (though convoluted) to rip the image data out of a .qct file, calibrate it and use it in xGPS.

Did this ever get released?

I have tons of MM maps and would love to be able to view them on the iPhone without having to fork out another £20 for a viewer like the official one!

It got released, and then MM got wind of it and had it pulled from the App Store It was called QCTviewer, for the record. I'm glad I got it while it was available.

However, the official MM app does look better than I thought it would be, and I was amazed to find that you would actually be able to use your existing maps with it! That's not like them.

From what I understand, there are two versions of their app available? A free one where you can't import maps, and the £20 one where you can?

You will have to check whether *all* old maps work with it, or whether yours may require the Hex hacking trick (assuming that works with the iPhone app).

That's what i'm worried about, mine are *Hex hacked* so don't want to fork out £20 for nothing.

Reading the reviews for the paid version and it looks like tons of people have trouble uploading even official maps to it.

I'd be wary of putting too much stock in what iTunes reviews say, there are a lot of retards out there who instantly 1-star apps when they can't muster up the intelligence to get it working. Look for some blog posts or forum threads instead for more reliable accounts of user experience.

I bought the full Memory maps app last night, £20 is very steep for basically a reader but when you have many maps already at home it makes it worthwhile.

Uploading via wifi is very simple, and worked a treat with all my maps.
