Have you downloaded/installed apps illegally?

Firstly this is not a discussion about how to do such a thing or where to get illegally obtained apps for the iPhone.

There are benefits to jailbreaking I agree on that point.

But regardless of the primary reason for jailbreaking I'm curious about the number of people who have installed apps illegally? A simple yes or no answer.

To be clear, an illegal app is one that you would normally have to pay for and download via the iTunes App Store. (Cydia apps aren't the same).

The poll is secret, you name won't be shown.

For the same of absolute clarity... anybody discussing methods of obtaining illegal, hacked, cracked or any other such type of software or warez will be put on the naughty step.

Keep it clean, folks

I did think of that but I concluded with the though, whats to stop the person from just downloading the new version illegally again.

i'll bet that £38 TOMTOM will be a million times better. I'd never get the first App release. look at how much better the latest games are than the first ones.

You've missed the community sentiment thats involved. Developers found the hack and they will know the developers that create the Apps. I don't think the crackers anticipate you filling your springboard with Apps without paying for the developers time and effort and knowledge.
The main reason the process isn't discussed is because its theft any way you cut it.

People say "the lite versions are available" which is generally true for games. But 'Things', 'Trains' and 'London Tube' (escpecialy when it was expensive) didn't have that option. Plus there is no refund option like the Make me Rich bloke enjoyed.

Re: Have you downloaded/installed apps illegally?

I always download them officially, usually after trying the Lite versions, alrthough not always. I have to say though, some apps like the Train Times one are ridiculously overpriced (£4.99), and they should rethink their pricing.

What do you mean? I'm a developer, I have a relatively successful iPhone app, the developers who worked out how to crack official apps don't know me?!

I don't think the crackers anticipate you filling your springboard with Apps without paying for the developers time and effort and knowledge.
You're kidding right? The whole point of software cracking is to avoid paying for anything in the first place.

The main reason the process isn't discussed is because its theft any way you cut it.
Rob and I both have said no discussing the process in this thread, sorry don't follow what you mean to say there?

I absolutely agree that Apple need a try-before-you mechanic because when there are 10 versions of a twitter app that cost from 59p-£4 what are you supposed to do? Other than going by reviews you don't have much of an option.
Replies inline. (just to add I know things can be read in a wrong way on forums so just so its clear my replies arent intended to be mean, just having a chat with you mate. )

I'm not familiar with that app but you're right, some apps are overpriced, but at the same time some apps are way underpriced too.

Re: Have you downloaded/installed apps illegally?

I'm not entering this debate as arguments will abound and it will soon find itself locked.

My most used apps are

  • Radio Times
  • News Stand
  • Peggle
  • Twittelator
  • Fake Calls
  • National Rail
  • Real Racing
  • Real Football 2009

All of the above are purchased apps that i use almost everyday. although i have used "Long John Silver" apps in the past.

lol, i'm not going to fly off the handle because you disagree with me

You read them pretty right...
just adding my opinion on the the thread really. I've read article from people who give details how to crack, but equally say they know the people who develop the Apps and emplore users to trial and then purchase if they like a product. (I'm not saying there is a big hotel in Milton Keynes and you all get together and have a shin-dig!)

I'm saying the people with the knowledge to write often have(or know someone with) the knowledge to crack.

Re: "the theft bit", honestly you could write this in every post and people will still ask questions about the process. Just adding why i agree it shouldn't be commonplace to talk about it.

The review/blubs alongside the apps are wowful. I wonder if Apple could create an "online iPhone" which would show a controlled trial of the app rather than the 4 screenshots which show nothing.

I suppose they don't want a PDF reader because they want to force people to use their own Apple Bookstore, kinda lame of them! But that reader wouldn't be a paid app even if it was allowed so doesn't really count. We're talking about paid apps that are downloaded and used illegally.

Glad to hear that! By the way there is a way to get a refund, but I think you have to actually phone them...the cost to call will probably be more than the cost of the app lol

Anything you should normally pay for, but have found a way of avoiding having to pay. Warez, effectively.

I don't considering Jailbreaking per-se to be theft as the developers have created their software for the Jailbreak community and make it very clear where cost is involved, with the majority being free.

Re: Have you downloaded/installed apps illegally?

I was aware that you could do this with a jailbroken phone and infact I have a mate that has, as for myself, the apps I download are usually free or not all that expensive anyway so it doesn't appeal to me. I've also paid for apps from cydia.
