Navigon - MobileNavigator Europe

It's £54.99, anyone got it yet?

It's 1.6GB according to other sites, which is pretty big, as I have a 8GB iPhone

Just in the middle of downloading it now. Completed around 500MB of the 1.6GB! It looks good from what i've seen, better than all the other alternatives around atm anyhow. However probably not a patch on TomTom.

Care to give a mini review after using it? Screenshots would be nice too

It would be good to hear how you will connect it up in your car - do you have a mount for your iPhone (if so which one) and how loud the sound is. I read a report that said it was far too quiet without amplifying the sound as the iPhone speaker was too weedy against the road noise - and no chance of using it plus car hifi at the same time.

Thanks

Re: Navigon - MobileNavigator Europe

I use my iPhone as my music source in the car plumbed up via a cable to the aux jack on my stereo. I also make calls when driving about twice a year. Therefore, my main concern is whether the volume of the directions can be heard when mixed in with my music through the speakers. I'm not too bothered about the phonecall integration.

What's annoying is that the current offer price is only for another week or so but Tomtom are yet to announce how much their app will be or a lot of the specifics about it. These 2/3 price Argos itunes vouchers are burning a hole in my pocket

What's annoying about a purchase decision like this is that if I don't like it, I can't sell it on. Which is why picking it up this week for, effectively, £40 is very appealing. All reviews eagerly awaited

Re: Navigon - MobileNavigator Europe

Hi guys , my quicky reveiw for you having used it fully all morning (4hrs worth) running on 3g not s
I'll start with the running of the app , it's not crashed once paused or frozen I've been to 5 locations spread over 60 miles and running perfectly
now to the actual features it has poi and you can search pretty much any location for more localised poi's so good there too
the look is very clear and easy to use , a tap of the screen during your route gives you an over head view and you can drop a pin and add a poi to your route easy as pie
it's been 100% in accuracy ,
the sound of the voice over woman is good ( little slow on one ocasion , but I had gone the wrong way and it had to redo my route )
so all in all well worth the cash , I'd like to see tomtom raise this bar as it's set very high already
any more 'qs' I can answer before anyone spends there cash I'll try to answer for them cheers edd

Re: Navigon - MobileNavigator Europe

What car mount are you using?
Do you have the sound going via your car stereo?
Are there speed cameras or capability to add?
How fast does it re-route

Thanks

I'd like to know if you can use the phone to play music at the same time as using this app, i.e. does it fade down the music to give voice commands as appropriate?

Re: Navigon - MobileNavigator Europe

Hi , I'm using a car mount from my 2g still all it does is chage the iPhone during usage , I've an itrip I use for music and it's not compatible with the nav. When connected it mutes the iPhone and does nothing ,
it has fixed speed camera support as I went through one today , no more options or anything pointing towards speed cameras

Re: Navigon - MobileNavigator Europe

Thanks for the review Eddy, as this is going to effectively cost me £40 I think I might be getting it and Tomtom can do one.

Just one thing to clarify - what do you mean by your speed camera comment? Does it have some camera positions loaded or does it just warn you about the speed limit you're driving through?

Cheers!

Update -- I'm a fool during my busy day today I over looked the itrip working it works 100% the voice doesn't cut out music and a double tap of the home and your iPod controls appear - all good
also it misses more speed cameras than it knows about

Which parrot car kit do you have? as I have the latest Parrot MKi9200, and as soon as I plug it in the Ipod will play. It doesn't let you run any other apps with audio, as I wanted to stream WunderRadio - but can not.

Unless this app over rides this? maybe it does as I suppose it's designed to use both simultaneously.

PS, good first post - welcome to the forum. You don't work for Navigator do you?

Re: Navigon - MobileNavigator Europe

I bought this today but haven't had much of a chance to try it out. I'll report more findings after using it tomorrow out and about on the way to meetings.

The download (from my home PC iTunes rather than the iPhone AppStore) and then sync install was about 45 minutes and first impressions are that it seems a little sluggish to navigate through the menus (I have it on a 3G iPhone) and takes a few seconds to catch up with what you type.

Unless I'm being really thick, it doesn't allow you to type full postcodes just the first four letters/numbers and then the road name/number, which is a bit annoying.

The maps are clear though and the voice volume through the iPhone speaker when you have no radio on and just road noise is ok but distorts a little at max volume.

Mine isnt slugish atall really, maybe a milisecond delay thats about it. Anyone else having any trouble? I find it really clear and easy to use. Maybe they could tweak the enter address part. Other than that its really good.

A Speed Camera addon would be great.

To anyone who's running this - is there any facility to import custom POI's? (I'm guessing not, but thought I'd ask the question).

Re: Navigon - MobileNavigator Europe

TOP TIP!!!!!

Got this from a review of the app on iTunes and it seems to work:

If you only want the UK map and the English voice as I do, once you've downloaded the app, find the .ipa file on your harddrive (before installing on the iPhone) and make a backup somewhere else. Then change the extension to .zip and unzip its contents somewhere. In there you will find the all the maps clearly named as "france.map" etc along with some ogg files for the alternate language voices. Delete the ones you don't want and then rezip the remaining files. Rename the zip as ".ipa" again and replace the one you originally downloaded. Then sync with your iPhone. The downloaded .ipa is 1.6Gb, the UK/English only one is 185Mb or so which is a *major* saving!

Haven't used the app in anger yet (hence I've kept a backup of the downloaded app) but a quick test suggests as long as I don't leave the country I'm golden

Enjoy!

Seriously tempted by this.

If Tomtom haven't announced anything by 29th June, I think I'll commit to the £55 introductory offer.

come on TT, show us something positive!!

Yeah I think I will as well. I don't particular want this and would rather have the tom tom app but I think Tom Tom are sleeping here. I mean how long have they had to write the app, they are losing customers waiting around. They should at least tell us a firm release date if it isn't fully ready yet

Re: Navigon - MobileNavigator Europe

Used this on my 60 mile journey to work this morning and it performed flawlessly....really impressed.

The sluggishness I spoke of in my earlier post has disappeared....a reset of the iPhone seemed to cure it.

The journey this morning was a mixture of 'A' road and motorway driving and I really like the way the view changes to a 3D picture at motorway junctions showing you very clearly which lane to be in. I tried confusing it by going down some wrong ways but it caught up and re-mapped really quickly.

I was travelling at 70 to 80mph had my car radio on and my window down slightly and the volume was just audible from the iPhone speaker.

Well worth a purchase IMO. Your move Tom Tom !

Re: Navigon - MobileNavigator Europe

Thought it might be worth pointing out that according to Navigon's original press release they are supposedly bringing out some regional map versions too (if you don't need the whole of Europe and want to save a bit of money). Supposedly [Germany, Austria, Switzerland] and [UK] will be the first ones available, followed by BeNeLux, Nordics, Spain, Portugal, France, Italy - and then later on by North America and Australia.

Quote:
[The whole of Europe] is available until end of June for the special price of 74,99 Euro with Europe maps for 40 countries. A regional map version for the time limited rate of 49,99 Euro follows very soon. From July on, the regional full version will cost 69,99 Euro in the App Store, with map material covering 40 countries: 99,99 Euro
Bearing in mind the UK price for whole of Europe is currently £54.99, I'd guess the UK specific one would be somewhere in the region of £35-40 initially and then going up to about £50, with the Europe-wide one going up to something like £75.

That said they are running out of time before the special introductory period ends so if the UK specific version isn't out by the end of this week then I'm not sure when / if the introductory price will actually apply for that one.

I haven't purchased one yet and need to investigate this area. For this mornings test I held the iPhone in my hand or had it in my lap for the journey.

Far from ideal obviously and my battery drained at an alarming rate but as I said it performed admirably.
