TomTom on the iPhone

OK, I don't have the official release date, but a little bird tells me that the app most likely to be released in line with OS3.0 (17th June)

On the price point......again, no info but will be steep

iPhone Cradle is rumoured to be released in July (Hopefully)

As it`s a GPS application and the touch IIRC doesn`t have GPS, then no it won`t work on the touch.

I thought TomTom for iPhone was gonna be like Gran Tourismo for the PSP

Chances are you'll be in a car when using TomTom on the iPhone, so you can keep the phone nicely charged while using it.

I think pricing will be in line with TomTom for other platforms, so I wouldn't expect it to be £100. Closer to £60-75 depending on the features it offers.

Been waiting for this. £100 seems expensive, will that include the cradle?

Of course, I'll wait for the reviews before purchasing over a dedicated device.

Looks pretty good to me, im looking forward to it.

I'd pay £40, but £100 is taking the **** as you can just about get a TomTom One for that sort of money.

£100 is waay too expensive. I quite like the mount unit though. i am thinking of buying the mount simply to mount my iPhone in the car and listen to the music.

Re: TomTom coming out on the............

I'm a bit confused now about all the fanfare over TomTom.

We went out last night and my GF was playing around with her iPhone whilst I was driving and getting us directions via Maps (over 3G) and it virtually does sat-nav at the moment anyway.

It showed us (with a high degree of accuracy I must say) where we were on the road and had step by step directions via Google Maps.

Whats so special about the TomTom software that the current 3G cannot do?

Re: TomTom coming out on the............

Well you get a 3D moving map on Tom Tom with voice instructions.

Step by step involves tapping to get the next instruction which isn't the best if you are driving solo.

Does anyone know if the maps come pre-loaded with the Tomtom app or will the unit still have to have a 3G or edge connection to download the data real time?

Even so, not the 'revolution' I first thought.

My only feeling on it is that the cradle with HAVE to have GPS built in, as if they rely solely on the 3G of the iPhone, then the TomTom will fall to pieces if you lose signal.

The maps don't have to be downloaded while driving. If you're only going to be driving in an area that has a 3G connection then Google maps is fine. But if you're not then you'll just see a blue dot on a blank grey screen!

Plus the iPhone isn't the best at holding a signal, so if it drops while driving at a critical point, you're stuffed. And the point of using a SatNav is that you don't know how to get to your destination, so losing your signal and data connection in a strange place with no guidance available is going to be a pretty stressful situation.

TomTom maps will be loaded onto the phone so you could use it totally offline. There will be a UK and International versions too, so in theory you could use your iPhone as a SatNav while abroad without data charges.

Yea, that will obviously be better then (not having to access online for the map data).

I still think they said the cradle would "enhance" the GPS though, which says to me they cannot trust relying solely on the current hardware for accurate/consistant GPS signals.

Re: TomTom coming out on the............

what im interested in is how big the tom tom app is going to be, considering space is a bit of a premium (too many songs) and im not gonna upgrade to the 3GS for ages.....

I would like a sat nav and have been holding out for this though.

Looking at the pictures, I can't see how they would have managed to cram in any extra hardware. I've got a few of the old O2 XDA II TomTom cradles sat around me at work and they are pretty big with obvious 'lumps' of hardware in.

I would hope that the TomTom cradle is a charging cradle only. Otherwise the whole portable SatNav idea goes out of the window if you can't use it out of a cradle.

But then, Apple aren't immune from shooting themselves in the foot....

Re: TomTom coming out on the............

I'm assuming that the cradle simply boosts the efficiency of the iPhone's own GPS antenna. A bit like one of those things you can get to help you get GPS through a fancy BMW windscreen.

They are going to have to be careful with the pricing though. £100 with the cradle would be acceptable but if the app itself is over £70 you might as well just buy an entry level standalone.

Surely they can't keep us waiting much longer now

Can I borrow your girl friend?

Nah, seriously tho. Maps over 3G is ok when there's a passenger with you. But, I wouldn't recommend trying it to a new destination on your own

Re: TomTom coming out on the............

Its also tomtom routing technology and hoping it will have live traffic and speed updates from other tom tom users to redirect you on the fly. Space isnt an issue tomtom 6 with UK and western euro maps fits on a 1 Gig MS duo card with loads of space under 700MB IIRC (with speed camera database) Ther eis a reason why tomtom is so good and its not the map data but the routing planning apps couple with voice guidance etc it is a whole lot better than a map

Memory based maps are what i have been waiting for (and a device to use them) not happy with idea of downloading maps on the fly and the cost while roaming is nuts. Thats why i didn't go for a blackberry with garmin as it sucks up your data allowance (which on orange is very limited) and abroad you could easily incur more than the cost of a satnav in data charges!

Re: TomTom coming out on the............

tomtom might do what there did with the ipaq,
give one free local map of your choice which you can download from within tomtom interface,
if there do this then the cost for the app will be £40 to £50,
and £100 if you buy Europe or some package which included the cradle, charger,

the local map option i think will be much better,
as the map sizes will only be around 10mb in size so wont take up much space,

typical sizes for UK maps are around 200mb to 250mb and 1GB for Europe maps

I think I might have missed something here - has the TomTom software been confirmed to work on the current 3G or is it exclusive to the 3GS?

Re: TomTom coming out on the............

I like the concept of this and hope that things such as mapshare, speed camaras and live traffic are supported.

I think though, that this will be a TomTom light version offering guidance and possibly cameras only and will be closer to £150 all in than the £100 pound mark.

Just hope that I am proved wrong and that TomTom offer a "proper" feature rich APP - lets be fair it's taken long enough to bring one out!!

I also hope that live traffic is supported, but yet to be confirmed
From what I understand, there will be a lite version which features a 10 minute rolling demo and the full version, both are due out next week.

As far as the price is concerned, it will not reach the 100 pound mark, but somewhere around about 60 pound mark which would make it the first premium iPhone application to be released on the app store. Whether or not that includes the cradle is yet to be verified.

Will keep you updated if more info comes my way
