You can't use the iPhone (non-JB anyway) as a drag and drop tethered device for docs, but Flashdrive will store the files on your iPhone via wifi. NB. You only need a wifi enabled computer NOT an internet connection. Nothing is stored online. It's simple, easy and it works for me.
Hope this helps and I haven't missed the point.

Thanks. The Docs to Go app works the same way, over wifi and I have been able to get it working now

. I had to pay 6 quid for it but its nominal and I'm just glad I can edit and create as well as view.
On a side note, I don't suppose you know the answer to the following question:
-for SMS , how do you access other folders eg. sent , deleted, draft txts that is if they exist !?
-in the calendar, when you set up appointments, is there a way to make it default to give a regular alert/reminder eg. 5 mins before every appointment , rather than having to set it manually every time ?
