File downloaders

Can anyone recommend a decent file download manager app please

Hi, If you are referring to an app to transfer files from to the iphone, I use fileaid/diskaid and works fine, however, 1) is quite expensive and 2) requires the pc app (diskaid) to be installed on the target pc to use the iphone as a usb stick. the app itself is free, but without the $10 or so, you can only use to ftp to/frm a pc in the same subnet of your wi-fi a.p.

No sorry I mean for downloading files from website and FTP etc. the functionaly is strangely missing from safari.

Yes, it's strange/odd/unusual that a web browser does not have the ability to down a file, such as a .zip. Every browser under the sun can do that, even my rubbish Nokia can. Only files it can save is a image. I know you can install a plugin to safari if you jailbreak, but I have not done that.

Its because the iPhone (to legitimate, non-jailbreak users) has no concept of saving and opening files or having any kind of storage area (other than on a per-app basis) - one of the reasons for this I'm sure is that it stops people messing about in a way that makes their OS installs on Windows for example go funny. It keeps the OS running properly so that the only thing that changes between devices is the hardware and the apps they install (which, again, are vetted for apple)

Sounds controlling, but given the power of the iphone, can you imagine trying to support devices that were crashing left right and centre due to changes the users had made to its configuration

Those who want to be a little more responsible over their phones can jailbreak and then save and open files from safari to their hearts content.

I dont see any reason why system files could be read-only and hidden, while allowing some memory for user files - like the camera roll does. It does not seem to be a huge issue for Symbian etc.

I have found a couple of apps for downloading files, not completely sure how they operate and if they are any good though - iDownloader, Downloader and QuickLeech.



BTW, does anyone know if jail-breaking allows the iPhone to be used in external drive mode, like the older iPods can be?
