Ping for Iphone

Noticed a mention of Ping for iphone on Twitter, it's billed as the answer to the Blackberry's free messaging service but for iPhone. Not had chance to d/l it yet but will report back once I have.

Re: Ping for Iphone

Right, it's straight forward and works a treat. Downloaded Ping on my iPhone and on the Mrs' iPhone. You choose a user name and select push notices and vibrate if required. It's pretty much self explanatory from there - send a message! My other half often goes over her SMS allowance so she thinks it's 'genius'. A nice addition indeed which many will find useful and might even save a few quid!

Re: Ping for Iphone

Hmmm... cannot see the point of it personally. Barely scratch the surface on my SMS/MMS allowance on O2.

Useful for people that send 1000s of texts though.

Re: Ping for Iphone

I think this is brilliant!

I tend to write fairly long texts. I don't go in for 'txt spk'. I don't see the point when you have a full qwerty keyboard.
Longer texts often count as 2 or even 3 or more messages. Also, when you send picture messages these account for 4 messages. So 500 text's a month can work out to closer to say 200 in real terms. 6/7 texts a day.

I've just got a friend using this too. her other half is in Japan, with an iPod touch, she can now chat with him as quickly as texting, completly free.

Great app.

Re: Ping for Iphone

Just got this myself as i do text alot.

The missus always goes over her allowance. She wont anymore.

Great little app.

Not sure how it works when using it abroad. Would you have to be on a wifi connection? As there would surely be data charges. Or maybe it runs in a totally different way.

Either way for free its a must have for serious text users.

Link for those interested.

Found the answer...

Troubleshooting

I can't seem to connect. The spinner does not stop and says connecting. What's wrong?

Apple blocks access to their notification server from unlocked devices. If you have an unlocked device, unfortunately there's not much we can do about it.
Might remove the unlock as I don't need it now anyway.

Some of us are on PAYG . Means I can text the gf at no cost.

Only thing I'm concerned about is battery life as I don't usually have push turned on.

Re: Ping for Iphone

So what is the difference between this and apps that let you use your free monthly web texts?

Besides the fact that Ping only works between iPhones.

Re: Ping for Iphone

Think this is a no go for me. Battery dropped (overnight, not being used) from 66% last night to 23% this morning. That's way too much for me.

Re: Ping for Iphone

The only problem seems to be that the Ping IDs are not unique??...or else I suddenly know a LOT of people as I have been getting messages all day from a variety of people I have never heard of.
Unfortunately I chose my first name and Surname initial, which it seems is pretty common.
