Tomtom car kit will work with the ipdod touch

Hi, it apperas that the tomtom car kit will have a built in gps and it claims it will work with the ipod touch, including 3rd party apps. I've got co-pilot on my iphone 3g, but as soon as I sync my touch, it wont sync the co-pilot app as it wont work, is there any way I can put co-pilot on my touch?

Cheers

Gary

Re: Tomtom car kit will work with the ipdod touch

This was discussed recently in the TomTom thread....

I'm still not convinced mind you, although happy to take the word of those who are sure about this.

I personally think the kit itself will work with the Touch, in that it will charge and you can use some of the features like the 3.5mm output etc. But I'm not convinced that the Touch will suddenly gain GPS. If so, it will be the first accessory to make use of the dock connector to add additional functionality, which should open up a world of options if Apple allow other vendors the same option.

The actual quote from TomTom that sparked all of this was:

Q: "Does it work with iPod Touch?"
A: "Yes, I confirm and it will work with an iPod Touch or other competing browsers"

So still vague, probably deliberately.

As said though, the benefit of the doubt will be given and I hope I'm proven wrong at launch.

From what I've read, the actual tomtom holder has gps built in.

It does, the question is does it work with devices that have no GPS, or will there be a hardware or software restriction in doing so.

I hope it does, as this sets a precedence for allowing other hardware addons via the dock connection. Imagine being able to plug in a camera flash, extra memory or goodness knows what else that's currently not possible.

Re: Tomtom car kit will work with the ipdod touch

Many thanks for copying and pasting what we were already discussing.

That hasn't shed any more light on it. The question was, will it work with the iPod Touch. Not 'Will the iPod Touch gain GPS functionality'.

As I've said already, I'm not saying it wont work and I am saying I hope it does. But equally let's not get too excited by a rep's answer to a non-direct question. Every site that claims to have the answer simply quotes the same answer to the same question.

Will it work.
Not,
Will the iPod Touch gain GPS functionality.
Or,
Can the iPod Touch and TomTom mount be used as a Sat Nav solution.

As you have said yourself, the mount will optimise GPS performance. Nowhere has stated it will function as a standalone GPS receiver for the iPod Touch.

AppleInsider | TomTom Car Kit, navigation software will not work with iPod touch

Worth a read if you were waiting for this to work with your iPod Touch or early iPhone

Re: Tomtom car kit will work with the ipdod touch

I was really hoping the one kit and App would have worked on both though, as if you have to purchase the App or kit twice it gets very expensive very quickly.
