Old iPhone dock and new iPhone 3g..

I've just got hold of an official iPhone dock online for a tenner and am now not sure it will fit the new iphone 3g!! The web is full of stories about it not fitting but two different people at the online apple store have told me if definitely will fit since 'apple always make products to last with old and new hardware'...

Does anyone have any idea in advance of release???

By most accounts, it seems that a) old docks won't work with new iPhone and b) there's isn't a dock in the box this time, either.

Cost cutting was clearly a big thing for Apple 2nd time round.

Yeah I've heard the new iPhone won't fit in the old dock.

All reports I have read or heard indicate the old dock will not work with the new 3G iPhone. It's possible they may be an adapter out there that allows it to work but I don't know for sure. I wouldn't necessarily listen to the Apple employees as the same thing was the case in the past when new iPods were introduced. Apple may offer a compatible dock for sale separately but again I'm not sure on that. I will probably just use the cable on it's own unless I can find an adapter that will work with my existing dock.

Sigh, I'm assuming that this is going to affect my iPhone and bluetooth dual-dock as well.

What am I supposed to do with it? Its not like anyone will want to buy it. And does this mean they will produce a replacement dual-dock?

Will the standard ipod dock not work with it? I have an Apple Universal Dock for my ipod touch and its massive compared to the iPod so if you took the relevant adapter out of it there should be enough room around the connection to slip the iPhone into.

I will confirm friday if you like when i get my Iphone 3g and test it out.

I think there are adaptors coming for the universal dock.

I spoke to the Apple store this afternoon since it was their duff advice that made me buy it! They could'nt apologise enough and seemed to be well aware of their guy giving out the dodgy info. I'm to expect a call back on monday from customer relations, not sure what they're gonna do since it was bought from ebay.......

Well what are the dimensions of the old iPhone dock as the new iPhone is wider than the old iPhone so thats where it may not fit.

Here are the dimensions of the new iPhone

Height:
115.5 mm (4.5 inches)
Width:
62.1 mm (2.4 inches)
Depth:
12.3 mm (0.48 inch)
Weight:
133 grams (4.7 ounces)

This would fit in my universal dock and as someone else suggested i have no doubt that Apple or someone will make the plastic adapters for it to fit snugly.

I picked my universal dock off ebay for £6 so you could do that.

Don't know the dimensions of the dock but the 1st gen iPhone's dimensions are as follows.

115 mm
Width:
61 mm
Depth:
11.6 mm
Weight:
135 grams

Strangely enough the 3G model has bigger dimensions all round but weighs slightly less. I guess that may due a little less wight on the internal components.

Considering the IMO negligible difference in size I'm surprised the old dock doesn't fit or does even an extra millimeter or two make a big difference.

Well apple to make the docks fit the products very well. I know that in my universal dock the correct adapter doesn't leave even 1mm space around my Touch.

If only the docks weren't so well made

So is it a case now that mimics the iPods? You buy a dock which is "bare bones" and the the plastic adapter / cover comes with whatever you've just bought?

and can you get black ones?

I think the universal docks will work OK. You can use without any adapter until you get the right plastic adaptor.

The reason for the change is partly the slightly different shape of the phone, and partly to allow the sound in and out of microphone and speaker which were rather enclosed on the old dock.

Yes the plastic adapters basically modify the dock to allow iPods/iPhones of different sizes.

There are no official black docks I'm afraid and I haven't seen any third party ones either.

You may well be able to take a Dremel tool to your old dock to relieve it slightly where the 3G's bulges get in the way. There can't be much difference. I think the point about the new dock is hands free operation and letting the sound in and out better. The old dock muffled the microphone & speaker.
