3rd party usb cable and dock not working

Hi

I bought a 3rd party dock and usb cable for my iphone 3g off of ebay and it arrived this morning. Thing is I cant get it to charge for more than 30 seconds before it stops. Is it normal for 3rd party cables to be incompatible?

its prob cos it s acheap copy, buy cheap - expect cheap

I wasnt expecting it to be upto Apple build quality or anything but at least expected it to work. Ive figured out now it is actually the usb cable that is at fault. Plugging an original cable into the dock seems to work ok. One thing is that it wont give out any sound whilst it is docked. Im guessing this is something to do with its line out it has at the rear. Think ill just stick to charging it the old way.
