My wife (impressively) cracked the iPad2 glass a cracker (by kneeling on it when the iPad was under a cover) - so much so that some fragments come away when you touch the screen. She spoke to Apple who wanted £200 to give her a refurbed unit.

She looked at a place found in google - theipadrepair - and they seemingly offer a courier to pick up from home, send to Manchester to replace the screen and screen mount, then courier to return home... all for £90.

She's not sent this away yet, but is considering it.

As a note, the iPad has two screens, in our case the top screen is the only one broken, so if you have both broken, it will probably be more £££.

Go to your local Apple store and explain to them what happened and see what they say. They are usually reasonable in replacing the screen and have been known to be sympathetic in their approach on occasion. ;-)

I took mine to apple (new ipad) and they wouldn't even contemplate doing anything for free. They did offer to repair for £249.

Try where you bought if from - I took mine back to Tescos yesterday and got a new one as a free replacement :-)

(NB: ours hadn't been dropped or anything though - it broke after being charged)

That's why I said "on occasion". Not always, but worth a try.

I took my mums into Manchester Apple Shop as it wouldn't charge. Wasn't the battery, was the charge point that wasn't working. I asked if that could be repaired, but they said they do not repair Ipads regardless of the fault as they are a sealed unit.
They initially quoted me a price for a refurbished unit (around £180 iirc as it's Ipad 1) and I explained that whilst it was out of warranty my mum is a pensioner and wouldn't want to replace the Ipad for £180 (it was a present anyway). I explained I was covering the cost as she doesn't have spare cash like that but was there any other solution. They put the ipad through as a knackered battery and charged £80 for a replacement unit which I was very pleased with.
Certainly worth taking the time to book an appointment and go and speak to someone in an Apple store if you have one close enough.

That ^^ said, a couple next to me had an Iphone 4s with shattered screen. It was out of warranty and from the off they were demanding the screen was replaced free of charge. They didn't look to be getting anywhere!

I share your pain. I dropped our iPad 2 on a hard floor and had three hairline cracks which over a period of about a week grew and eventually started to splinter.

Booked an appointment with an Apple genius and even though I was ultra polite and honest I still had to fork out £200 for a replacement. Taught me a very harsh lesson about investing in a decent cover (we were only using the Smart cover which is woefully inadequate). My iPad 3 is wrapped up in cotton wool :-)

One thing that annoyed me though was that Apple insist on taking away your broken iPad in return for charging you £200 for a replacement. If the unit is unrepairable, then why do they want it?

It's £200 in exchange for your old one, just like larger car components. They ship back to their factory and remove the working bits for use on the next refurbs.

You can keep your broken one if you purchase at full price. :-)
