need help with connecting my system up

hi guys, im completely new to HD and want to get the best out of my system

i have

TV

Sony bravia KDL-40L4000 with

2 hdmi connections
1 component connection
2 rca av input
2 rgb scart inputs
bravia sync

AV unit

Sony bravia DAV-DZ660 with

1 audio line in (analogue)

1 audio line in (optical)
1 audio line in (digital coaxial)

1 rgb scart
1 hdmi

sony playstation 3 with

1 hdmi
1 av multi out
1 optical digital out

SKY plus box with

1 rgb scart
1 s-video out
audio out phono sockets
1 optical digital out

so far, i have the ps3 connected to the tv by hdmi and connected to my av via optical,

the av is connected to the tv via hdmi,

the sky+ is connected to the tv via rgb scart.

how do i get my sky+ connected to the av to enjoy 5.1 as there is only 1 optical digital input on the av unit?

have i connected it all up in the best way?

please help me

Re: need help with connecting my system up

So far perfect.

The only part you are missing is an optical switch so you can connect both optical cables to the one input on your DAV.

This comes up pretty often around here so do a quick search and you should find a few reconsiderations for optical switches.

Only other advice is to make sure the Sky box is set to output RGB and the SCART you are using on the TV is configured the same if it needs to be.

Re: need help with connecting my system up

hey thanks for the reply, its good to know im on the right track

someone mentioned to me that it would be possible to run a optical audio cable from the sky+ to a digital coaxial convertor then into the AV, would this work?

Re: need help with connecting my system up

Yes, if you prefer then you can get an optical -> coax converter and use the coax input on your DAV.

Again, a quick search will yield a few options. Also check Maplins as they sell them, but be careful to get Optical -> Coax not Coax-> Optical as both exist and they are not interchangeable.

Only reason I don't always suggest going down that route straight away is that if you end up getting another device that you need to connect then you are still going to have to get a switch at which point the converter becomes an expense that could have been avoided.

Re: need help with connecting my system up

to be honest, i was amazed at the lack of connections on the DAV-DZ660, considering it is supposed to power all of your audio you would have thought it would have at least 2 optical inputs.

oh well, thats what you get for being cheap i guess lol.

just need a remote to control it all now cause all these sony remotes look the same

Most all in ones are like this. They are primarily DVD players with their own surround system. Manufacturers add a couple of inputs as an extra feature, but they were never primarily designed for this. You want an AV Reveiver/Amp for that they can take audio and video from lots of devices.
