Newb here with a quick question

I live in the states and have comcast cable with HD through a dual tuner box. The box does not have HDMI. Instead it has DVI, component, composite ports.

My question is would a DVI to HDMI cable since it is digital be better than component cables? I have a new sharp aquos 46" 1080p TV that I just picked up.

BTW our cable service over on this side of the pond SUCKS!

EDIT: Currently I have the HD tuner box connected to my TV with old composite cables and the picture quality is horrible. Am I correct in my thinking that composite cables will not work correctly with HD?

Hello ProStreetCamaro

HDMI and DVI carry Digital Component video - some will argue its better than Analogue Component video; others say it looks artificially sharp.

As always the best option is to try both - a decent DVI to HDMI cable ought not to cost a fortune.

Analogue Component video can be SD or HD - so that in itself is not your problem.

Have you had a good play with the Menu options on the Display?

I have messed around with the menu settings and got it looking the best that I could. Non HD channels look like poop and are kind of blurry looking. HD channels here are only broadcast in 720p from my understanding (comcast) and they do look better but not nearly as good as I was hopeing for. The display model in the store looked amazing and very sharp with great colors. Thats another thing. The colors look dull no matter how much I adjust them.

The cables I have right now are composite and not component. Just 1 yellow video cable and a red and white audio cable. So you dont think if I got component cables or the DVI to HDMI cable that it would look any better?

Hello ProStreetCamaro

Composite will look pretty horrid and means your asking the Comcast box to 'Down convert' any HD Broadcasts to SD and the Display to then 'blow up' that Image to fill the HD pixel array.

Analogue HD (your Component) or Digital HD (on HDMI) will look an awful lot better than what your currently viewing.

HDMI is possibly your best option as you wont then run into any 'Denial of Service' options that some Broadcasters may apply to the Analogue HD Output of your box + you have Video and Audio on the one cable to your Display.
