home cinema set-up help

A friend of mine has given me a Sony SF800M - what he calls a home theatre system - A receiver with 4 speakers and a sub.

Me being a bit of a div with this sort of stuff i am struggling to set it up.

Basically i have an ntl digital box, a philips dvd recorder and a samsung LCD.

At the moment i have the ntl box linked to the dvd via scart, and the dvd to the lcd via scart.

on my way home from work i bought an audio jack lead. Thinking it was a simple case of plugging the leads from audio out on the telly / dvd recorder to one of the audio ins on the home theatre box. Nothing happens, i havnt got an instruction manual and i am struggling.

Any help appreciated.

Re: home cinema set-up help

Hi if it were me I would connect the recorder to the receiver with either a digital coax or optical and the ntl box with stereo rca phonos(red and white) if there is not an optical out on the ntl box.
You should be able to download the manual from the internet.

Re: home cinema set-up help

Martin,

Thanks for the reply. I will pop down comet and get a digital coax cable. I have already got the rca cable, so that should be it then?

When i enter the setup in my lcd ---> Audio and try and select source the option is greyed out??

Once connected to the receiver you will then be able to select the audio source on the receiver and video on the lcd.Personally I would not connect the lcd to the receiver.

Re: home cinema set-up help

I see. So the receiver does not have to be linked to the lcd then. For some reason i thought it had to. I have just connected the rca's from the ntl box to the receiver ( no speakers attached yet) flicked through to video 2 on the receiver( the rca's are plugged into video 2 input on the receiver) and i can still hear sound from the lcd speakers. Just quickly done the same with dvd. i have checked the ntl menu and there are no options for audio out etc, although i am definately plugged into the audio out on the ntl box.

Re: home cinema set-up help

Because you have the recorder and ntl box connected by scart which carries video and audio you will get sound from the screens speakers and the receivers speakers. When using the receiver for audio just turn the volume down on the tv.Forgot to mention when you have connected the recorder with digital coax to go into the recorders menu and set the audio output to bitstream to enable you to listen dolby digital and dts encoded discs.

Ok, that sheds a bit of light on the situation for me. I get the general idea now.

Many thanks for your help.
