Dummy needs advice!

I'm sort of new to all this HD carry on and as my crt went belly up a couple of weeks ago I got myself a Samsung F86 for the living room.

So previousley I had my PS3 in the play room connected to my LCD via HDMI, using the TV speakers. On the rare occasion the PS3 moved into the living room I got to enjoy it thru my sony 5.1 surround decoder, connected with the optical out.

So, new telly all connected I've got the PS3 in via HDMI and internal mute on the tv with sound coming out to the surround via optical out.

I'm puzzled because I dont get surround sound from the ps3 thru the tv to the decoder? The PS3 says it will only output 2 channel unless I connect directly to the decoder.

Am I misunderstanding all this HDMI carry on?

Also does anyone know if the sony ps3 HDMI cable is 1.3 compatible? The TV instructions say a HDMI 1.3 cable should be used.

Thanks for any advice.

Re: Dummy needs advice!

You need to change the PS3 sound settings to optical out. As for the HDMI, your cable will be fine. I would be very surprised if it wasn't. If it isn't there are plenty of cheap cables around that folks have used on 1080p/1.3 and have had no problems. If you are looking for a 1.3 certified cable for peace of mind, markgrant, tmfsolutions, ukhdmi all sell them.

Re: Dummy needs advice!

SO the optical goes from TV to amp?

I suspect you'll need to connect optical direct to the amp from the PS3

Re: Dummy needs advice!

I put optical to from the ps3 to the amp and all is ok.

I'm puzzled about this hdmi carry on. To get the best sound thru hdmi I need an amp that has an hdmi in then? If so why does the ps3 not have 2 hdmi out's?
