up conversion of s-video

My Yamaha amp only has 2 component ins and 1 out to the plasma. I currently use these for Sky HD and xbox. I'm hoping to reconnect my dvd player because of the noise the xbox makes during playback. The amp will upconvert through s video to component.
Does this mean that i'll get component quality video or does it simply mean i will be able to watch dvd's through the component out at s video quality.
The dvd player has component out as well but as i've said, the yamaha only has 2 component ins.

Re: up conversion of s-video

It means you will get SVideo quality at best.

Which is actually quite good. In fact, you may be pressed to notice much difference, assuming the amp doesn't degrade the signal in the process.

The major advantage of Component, though, is in de-interlaced (progressive) signals. SVideo won't deliver these, but if your DVD player is a "progressive scan" model, component would. To better effect, probably.

That's what you get. There's an often used phrase to describe upconversion (not upscaling): you cannot polish a turd.

Does your plasma have an RGB Scart in as you may find the quality of that much better than S-Vid upconverted.

No
The plasma only has vga in and component. I very rarely watch dvd's so i'll just have to put up with s-video (still, it'll be more bearable than the thunderous noise the xbox makes)
