Unhappy LCD TV + Home Cinema + PS3 = Confusion

Basically,

I've bought

1) a samsung 40inch m87 lcd

2) a sony ps3

3) a panasonic home cinema system (sc-ht540)

http://www.asda-electricals.co.uk/sh...bp=ht540s&bi=0

-----------------------------------

and im confused

lcd > sony (hdmi - no probs)

lcd > panasonic (5 cable component)

HOWEVER, if im watching a movie/playing on my ps3 (and NOT using the home cinema dvd player) will i still hear surround sound from the additional speakers?)

OR do i somehow need to connect the home cinema dvd player to the ps3?

and if so, how ?

replies would be gratefully appreciated, before i buy every known cable on ebay

cheers,

You would have to connect the digital optical out of the PS3 into your Panasonic home theatre system so that it can decode the multi channel sound from the PS3.

The specs for the Panasonic SC-HT540 on the link you supplied to not say whether or not it has a digital optical input on it, and I had a (very) brief look on the Panasonic site and couldn't find that particular system, but it will be easy for you to look on the back of it and find out.

Re: LCD TV + Home Cinema + PS3 = Confusion

The SC-HT540 unfortunately does not have an optical input, however you can still listen to your PS3 through the system by connecting the red/white parts of the supplied PS3 AV (red/white/yellow) cable to the AUX input on the back of the SC-HT540, and then pressing EXT-IN on the remote such that AUX is displayed on the front of the home cinema.

I am unsure what you mean when you say
"lcd > panasonic (5 cable component)"
because component video consists of 3 cables (red/green/blue), the extra two are probably audio leads. If so, you could use them instead of what I mentioned above, to connect the TVs audio output to your home cinema (from the AUDIO OUT sockets on the TV to the AUX in on the SC-HT540), therefore whatever you watch at any one time would come through the home cinema speakers -- Freeview, PS3 etc.
