Which sub cable

Hi

My first post and noobie to this.

Bought a cheap Gale 4070 Sub at the weekend (Richers gave me a good deal on one), seems ok for a budget sub and adds decent bass to films etc

Now I'm currently connecting my sub via the 'Rec Out' on my amp to the sub using some crappy phono leads. Now am I right thinking I only need to use 1 phone lead as its a mono feed?

If so, would something like this do the job? :- http://www.leadsandthings.com/index....roduct_id=1563

Thanks!

Re: Which sub cable

Your record out is stereo, but I wouldn't recommend that as they're not normally effected by the volume control - Your bass will stay at the same volume regardless of what volume you've set the speakers to play at.

What amp have you got?

Re: Which sub cable

I had an A5, as a stand in amp, a while back and it had preamplifier outputs. If your's does not, you would need to connect any sub via speaker level connections.

Is there anything on the back of your sub that looks like a loudspeaker binding post with the word 'IN' anywhere near it?

Re: Which sub cable

Hi Russ

I dont think it has the pre-amp outputs.

So am I right thiking the best way for me would be to wire the sub up from my speaker connections on my amp, then my speakers wired into the sub?

Re: Which sub cable

That depends. Does your sub have speaker level inputs on it? Maybe a photo of the back of it would help.

Re: Which sub cable

I checked my A4 amp last night and I do have 'pre-outs' on my amp. I connected my sub via them and now I can control the sub volume via my amp.

So, cable choice, do I need to use 2 RCA's or just a single? (mono signal?)

You just need a single coax RCA - RCA from the subwoofer pre-out on your amp to the left (or right) line in on your sub Something like this should be fine

Since your system does not have bass management, the bass is not summed into mono. Therefore yes, you do need the 2 separate RCA leads plugged into the sub, where the bass signal(s) ARE summed into mono.

Many thanks for your input.

Perhaps you could clear a few things up (for me at least) re line-in inputs on sub amps. That is how they were originally intended for use (I'm guessing from your reply L & R pre-outs from a suitably equiped amp to L & R inputs on the sub?) and why modern sub amp design and production still include the L & R input when I would guess nearly all modern AVR's and processors do have bass management. The Hi-Fi crowd perhaps?

Regards

Re: Which sub cable

They include all the options because there is little point in loosing access to an entire market sector. Plus, historically, the LFE channel was a relatively recent invention. Subs pre-date surround sound by some margin.

If you think about it, the SVS PB-10 has no access to the stereo music only crowd as it has a single LFE input only. No low or high level stereo inputs. I've never understood why they did that.

As stated, you do need to use both cables to ensure your sub receives both halves of the stereo signal.

But in your case, I would probably use the high level inputs anyway. You can use the cheapest bellwire going for a high level connection which does not require the screening that can jack up the price of sub cables for low level inputs.

Basically you take the cheapest wire you can find and connect it from the speaker outputs on the amp to the speaker inputs on the sub. Your main speakers stay connected to the amp as before. Job done and for pence.

Re: Which sub cable

Russ,
Slightly off topic but are the cables supplied with the BK XLS200 of decent quality?. I have an Arcam AVR300 that will be driving it once it arrives and want to get the best out of the sub without throwing money away. I will probably use both connections so I can use the sub with music as well as home cinema.
Thanks

Re: Which sub cable

They are perfectly decent, proper screened sub cables. Probably as much as you will ever need. Unless you need to go longer than 5m that is.

Thanks Russ, 5m is fine as given my room size it allows a degree of flexibility with positioning the sub, however i think there is probably only GOING TO BE 1-2 positions that will have WAF!!.
PS-Don't be surprised if I am back in contact about setting the sub up correctly once it arrives!!
