Question Scart coupler

Just bought something described as a scart coupler (back-to-back female) and the description is "Ideal for coupling two leads together to make a longer length, or converting a plug to a socket"

When I tried using it for extending a scart lead it didn't work. Maybe I'm missing something but it seems to me that one device can't do both jobs.

"converting a plug to a socket" requires an adapter with straight through pin for pin connectors - i.e. it's just a gender change.

"coupling two leads together" ... If I join two scart leads using a straight through connector as above, won't the wire cross-overs in the first cable be reversed back again in the second cable? So you end up with a two part scart cable run with no crossovers. Or is my reasoning up the spout?
