This might sound like a stupid question to some but...

...if I connect my new upscaling DVD player to my tv with component video cables, which cable do I need to buy to get sound aswell?

For info my DVD player is the Philips 5960 and my TV is the Samsung LE32R74BDX.

Cheers

You'll need to use HDMI to upscale, few players upscale over component. For audio you can use optical if your connecting to an amp, if its directly to your TV then a red and white RCA will do

I've tried it with a HDMI cable but I can't really notice much difference in the picture quality. The manual for the DVD player states that progressive scan video quality is only possible by using component video cables. This puzzled me slightly as the player has a HDMI output, what is the point of this if progressive scan only works with compondent cables?

Cheers.

To get best possible picture quality, use HDMI from you DVD player to TV. Only if your TV doesn't take HDMI, then fall back to next best quality which is component. But when and if you do use component, you will need an extra set of leads to pass the sound to the TV as well.

Hello MarkPJames

'Component' Video comes in two flavours; Analogue (over 3RCA) or Digital (over HDMI) - both can be Interlaced or Progressive and both can be SD, ED or HD.

A lot of kit only offers up-conversion of an SD Disc to an HD resolution on HDMI - though some players do also offer it on 3RCA.

HDMI carries Digital Video + Audio on a single cable whereas you will require an additional cable to get audio into your TV (Optical or Coaxial for 5.1 or 2RCA for Stereo) alongside the Analogue 3RCA video cable.
