Loudspeaker Cables - Silver or Copper ?

What are the advantages and disadvantages of Silver cables over copper cables (assuming both are same diameter, say 6mm)..

Would it make any difference if:
(a) The tweeter was silk dome or Metal dome or ribbon
(b) For audiophile quality speakers, what cable would you recommend (Silver or copper)

Thanks, AJ

Re: Loudspeaker Cables - Silver or Copper ?

Hi aj2004.

Many years ago I was heavy in to hi-fi and to be honest, there is a lot of **** said about audio gear. This wire is better and these speakers sound sweeter. In the end, it all depends on your ears. The way you hear sound maybe slightly different from someone else. The best thing to do with any audio setup is to test it.

By silver wire I assume you mean steel wire. Copper is more conductive and I would prefer this, it carries the signal better. Especially if the cable is long, but will you hear any difference? I doubt if Superman could tell the difference, there might be the very slightest increase in volume when you use copper, but you will only notice if, as I've said, the cable is long from your amp to the speakers. Buy copper by all means, but don't pay silly money for it, unless you are a rich *******. If that's the case, can i have your address...hee hee.

P.S. Just in case you are a rich ******* and you’re talking about silver cable, as in real silver. Silver is the most conductive metal on the conductivity scale, but only slightly ahead of copper. The cost of silver cable is not cost effective and only you would notice the difference….in your wallet. I hope I've been of some help.

Hello aj2004

Your never going to get a definitive answer to your question - some folk claim a bit of wet string will do others will lay out thousands on pure Silver conductors.
