Connecting my ps3 thorugh coaxial

Hi all, Just joined and i need some help please.

I've just bought a ps3 and I want to connect it to my acoustic solutions surround sound system. The amp is connected to my dvd player. Can i buy a optical to coaxial converter like this one Optical to Coaxial Digital Audio Convertor : Connect! - Digital Audio : Maplin and connect my ps3 to the dvd player? Or would i be better of buying an amp with digital optical input?

Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Connecting my ps3 thorugh coaxial

If your amp does have a digital co-ax input then yes the converter will do just what you want.

I answered a similar question on here a few days ago and it turned out the connection the poster thought was a co-ax digital input was actually an aerial input (his system was a recorder as well as a player) So its a good idea to confirm exactly what your unit does have available before purchasing anything.

Another thing is does your existing system do DTS and Dolby Digital. The reason I ask is if you use the PS3 as a bluray player you'll probably find most discs use DTS sound and not Dolby Digital (this is a good thing if your amp supports it) My mums Panasonic System is like this. Fine for DVDs but you only get stereo (or at best Dolby Pro Logic) from discs that only have DTS and no DD

Just want to be clear, if this is a normal DVD player then it will not have a coax input, only an output.

If you have a spare input on the speaker system then it should work just fine.

Re: Connecting my ps3 thorugh coaxial

Thanks for the replies, The amp doesnt have digital co-ax input. I thought the dvd player was input not output. That clears it up for me then thanks. Might buy something like this then Panasonic SC-PT170EB-K 5.1 DVD Home Cinema System: Amazon.co.uk: Electronics & Photo

Or would i be better of buying an amp with the right connections?

Re: Connecting my ps3 thorugh coaxial

Let's take the time to be 100% sure, what is the exact make and model of the DVD player?

Re: Connecting my ps3 thorugh coaxial

OK, that is confirmed then, the coax is an output for sure.

I would suggest you head over to the 'all-in-one' forum to get some more input on alternative systems.

If you buy a new amp you will almost certainly need to buy new speakers as well and although that will deliver a better system in the end, it may be outside your budget right now.
