Connecting Set Top Box, DVD Recorder and TV

Hi,

I have just purchased a DVD/VHS recorder for my grandad to copy vhs to dvd. It has built in freeview, so can be plugged into their tv via scart lead to get digital channels.

Their tv only has 1 scart socket though, and they would like to watch one program and record another. Would it be possible for me to split the signal from the aerial on the roof to go into both the set top and dvd boxes. Then output signals from both of them to a scart switcher, so that the dvd/vhs could record a program from its internal tuner, and the tv could still display a different channel from the set top box?

I appreciate that I might not have explained that very well, so I would be more than happy to clarify further if anyone is kind enough to help me out. My grandparents are very technophobic, but I figure if that set up worked, they could cope with switching the scart signal.

Cheers in advance,

Hi, and welcome to the forums.

You won't need to get a SCART switch or aerial splitter, because the signals can be 'chained' through each other:

Aerial from wall ---> DVD/VHS (RF IN)
DVD/VHS (RF OUT) -> coax flylead -> Freeview box (RF IN)

then,

DVD/VHS ("TV/AV1" SCART) ---> Freeview box ("VCR" SCART)
Freeview box ("TV" SCART) ---> TV SCART

Switching on and pressing play on the DVD/VHS will 'break through' the Freeview box and be shown on the TV.

It is helpful if model numbers are supplied, to be sure of the connections.

I don't have model numbers to hand but I will try and get hold of them from my grandparents. Will this allow me to record one digital channel on the DVD/VCR tuner and watch a different digital channel on the tv from the free view box? Cheers

Yes, the DVD/VCR records independently of the TV or the Freeview box.
