speaker cable quality

I have Tannoy SFX 5.1 speakers which came with some seemingly dirt cheap speaker cable.. It is just short of the amount I need.. I need 35 meters.. Would it be advisable to buy more expensive cable or will what I have suffice in terms of not degrading sound quality and durability? I am planning to encase the cables in a conduit with removable front for easy access.

Re: speaker cable quality

Hard to know without seeing what they actually came with. If it's the cheapest nastiest bell wire (very very thin) then it's definitely worth replacing - especially if you're installing it in the walls.

I'm quite certain it is that stuff.. pretty thin.

Will something like this suffice?

Fisual Miniature Series Speaker Cable 30m: Amazon.co.uk: Electronics & Photo

Re: speaker cable quality

check out DIY cat5e speaker cables. These are good VFM cable.... unless you do not have time to do the braid.. i would suggest the vandamm blue series which is also quite popular in the forum.

Re: speaker cable quality

I don't have much time and not sure how to do the braid!

How is this for spec?:

 •
 • 24 strands x 0.2mm per conductor

 • 0.75mm CSA conductor size. Cable dimensions : 5mm x 3mm

 • 99.999% pure oxygen free copper for ultimate signal quality

 • Very long operating life

 • Attractive transparent flexible insulation with silver/copper conductors for easy polarity identification

depends on the price... i m not sure 0.75mm CSA would be enough for your speakers.

If you do not have time check out the sticky of the cable forum... vandamm blue and black series will suit your demand just find.

Re: speaker cable quality

speaker spec:

Recommended amp power (watts): Satellites & centre: 15-100 watts Sensitivity (dB): Satellites & centre: 85 Nominal impedance (ohms): Satellites & centre: 6 Magnetically shielded? Satellites & centre: Yes W x H x D (mm): Satellites: 97 x 140 x 95
Centre: 230 x 120 x 95
Subwoofer: 250 x 345 x 370 Weight (kg): Satellites: .75 each
Centre: 1.5
Subwoofer: 9 Frequency response (Hz): Satellites & centre: 140 - 78,000
Subwoofer: 45 - 140 Crossover frequency (kHz): Satellites & centre: 4.5 kHz
Subwoofer: Variable, up to 140 Hz

and the cable spec I gave is for 35p per meter.

The blue van damm is between £1.50-£2 a meter, eh?

Re: speaker cable quality

2 x 1.5mm Blue Series SRP £1.90/m - PowerBuy price £1.19/m

the 1.5mm CSA should be more than enough for your speakers

3x CAT5e are roughly equiv. to 2.5mm2 CSA cores and cost about 90p a metre
(CJROSS http://www.avforums.com/forums/inter...ker-cable.html )
It is better buy in 100 m. drum.

It look like your choice is the cheapest, however, for the quality and value for money wise i can not comment much on the 0.75 as i never try 0.75 mm CSA cable before.

sorry could not give you a clear cut...

if you mean 1mm CSA per + or -, then it should be fine.
