I'm going to connect my dvd player to my tv with the component connection, does this carry audio signal or will I need to use a 'yellow/white/red' cable for the audio as well?

No and yes. Well, the red and white anyway, unless you have a digital connection on the telly, which only very recent tellies have.

I do have a digital connection on the telly but not on the dvd player. Thanks for your help, I have a normal phono cable that I will use for the audio.
