Adding a .APK file

I am new to the Hero before I bash ahead how do I add an .APK file to the phone.

you need to put the apk file on your sd card, then download an app from the market called apk installer and use that to browse to the file on your sd card

DOWNLOAD htc sync here HTC Sync Upgrade for HTC Hero

When you sync your phone simply double click and it will ask you where to install etc.
