Android and MobileMe compatibility?

Guys, I'm on the verge of jumping ship from an iPhone 4 to a One X (when released). But my only problem may be the fact that I have a MobileMe account - Mail, Calendar, Contacts etc - which I really can not afford to lose.

I need the possible new HTC to be able to do all that the iPhone does with MobileMe on the iPhone - Push Mail, Cal and Contacts. Is this possible?

I know some people have setup GMail accounts instead, but due to business needs I really cannot afford to change accounts right now.

Email isn't a big problem, the IMAP settings are simply mail.me.com and smtp.me.com

The big problem is in May last year there was an update to MobileMe that prevented all third party services and apps from accessing the calendar. I've not heard of this decision being reversed, so would assume it's still not possible.

To get around this, you could use a desktop client to sync your MobileMe calendar to a Googlemail calendar, export your contacts from MobileMe into Googlemail and simply use the email from MobileMe only.

Or, sticking with the Googlemail theme, get Googlemail to collect your email from MobileMe (using the settings mentioned above) so it appears in a Googlemail inbox and use that on your One X. You can even set your MobileMe email address as the default one to send from.

Thanks RobM. The last option sounds good to me. But, when I reply to an email will it be from my MobileMe acct or GMail acct?

Will look into this properly before jumping.

You can choose which is the default, or you can choose that the From address is the same as the address the email was sent To. So if I email you at your MobileMe address and you reply, this option would reply from your MobileMe address. If I email you @Googlemail.com, replies are sent from the same.

Since it's free to do so and you'll certainly need it if you go Android, sign up for a free Googlemail account, hit the settings option, then the Accounts tab and you'll see the options there.

Thinking more practically and long-term, making the move away from MobileMe to Googlemail from your email would be a wise idea regardless of your handset choice. I say the same to anybody who uses email provided by their ISP. Being tied into an account that is unique to any platform or provider will always bite you eventually, be it because you've changed ISP's and lost access to your email, or change platforms (iOS to Android in your case) and suddenly realise the pain heading your way. Having a totally neutral email account means it can always move with you through any changes.

I tried to set-up a GMail acct a few weeks back, but because my name was taken - and i didn't want to add any numbers to the end of my name, I didn't bother going ahead with it.

But you're right about the practicality aspect of it. Might go back to GMail and see if I can be a little creative with the email address

Like a middle name.

David.A.Smith@ Gmail ?

I used this to pass that barrier. Better than numbers IMO.

Rob, I've set-up my Gmail account.

Now, I know I can send emails from my Gmail acct but still using my MobileMe acct. But, if I add/amend contacts and calendar entries either on my Mac or on my new Android device, will these also automatically sync between phone and Mac?

Only if you've setup Address Book to Sync with your Googlemail account. Check this out: Google Sync services

Follow the instructions there and you'll have full synchronisation in all directions. You may need to import existing contacts into one or the other first though, for fairly obvious reasons.

Pretty much. For iCal especially the changes are within seconds in all directions. I don't use Mail on OSX so couldn't comment on that (I stick to the web interface). Address Book takes a bit longer to update, but not long.
