I would say it's an upgrade from the 3G, it's much faster that's for sure.

Thanks for pointing that out, I thought I already had TBH but remembered I closed that one before opening this one and forgot to edit my closing post. DOH, even I'm not perfect (although I'm pretty close )

Go to the empty screen click the cross(plus sign) at the bottom of the screen and it gives you the options of widget or programs, dont forget to clear yourself some space if choosing widget, programs are just icons a widget will fill the screen.Hope this helps.I've only had mine for a few days and am loving it.

What brightness setting do people use?

Also, can anybody recall what the default brightness setting was? I seem to recall it being somewhere between 35 and 50 on a scale of 1-100 - so between 1/3 and 1/2 of the bar full.

After having the phone for about four months I recently discovered the 'auto' brightness setting which allows you to read the screen in full sunshine without faffing about with the settings. Brilliant. Just annoyed it took me so long to activate it.

Just an update, I have had my trusty desire now for almost 4 months, I've kicked the addiction that was my iPhone and can never see myself going back.

I almost got the hype to go back with the iPhone 4 but managed to get through them dark days.

I just thought I would list on here the reason why I think the Desire is so great and why I won't be going back.

1) Customisation

It never ceases to amaze me how much I can change things,

I have picture frames (picture of soon to be wife and pet rabbit) on the desktop
moving wall papers (Super Mario one is great)
I can change my ring tone again without having to pay Apple (not that I did)
links to URLS and people on the desktops
Folders (one of the standout features of iOS 4)
Setting profile (auto change settings based on time of day, location etc)
ton's of techies customization settings (the fact I can click on an icon to turn bluetooth off without having to drill down through several manuals
I can cut and paste files to the storage card.

2) I can change my battery and my storage

I have a desktop charger with two batteries and I have recently purchased a 32 GB SD card, my big concern always with the iPhone was the battery and replacement.

I have two batteries with me now so I never worry that I can't turn on Googlemaps if I'm lost. Also with Settings profile my battery has improved.

3) There's an APP for that.

Everyone including myself said the music player and sms wasn't as good, I simply went and got

btunes ( pretty much as good as iphone) .
handcent (great SMS client)
Dolphin Web Browser (amazing browser, you can use swipe gestures to load websites)

Games - solved this and just got an NES/SNES emulator off the market place.

I pretty much have all the apps now I had on my iphone, I can't wait for Froyo to become standard as it should bring more developers. I have also noticed a large amount of apps that were only available on the iphone coming to Android.

Likewise I can use a barcode scanner in the phone to download an app I see mentioned on a website without having to go to an app store

4) Integration

Seamless integration with everything I use

Camera hooks in Flickr and Facebook
Contacts sink to google
Video Camera sinks to youtube.
App for the CCTV cameras I have at home.

I could go on and on, the Desire isn't perfect but there is soooo much potential .

5) My phone isn't controlled by Jobs and co and his overpriced tarriffs.

For anyone reading this, give your phone a chance, if you are new from Apple stick with it.

I found the picture frame widget last week too, absolutely great having photos of your family dotted around your home screens. I know you can go to the photo album and see all your pics, but the picture frame widget brings back the old piccy in a wallet feel, which is a simple thing to make a softie like me smile

Thanks for all that bud, just what I wanted to hear. My 3G contract was up this month and I was getting an ip4 but all this stock crap, the cost and alleged issues have made me think sod it.
My desire comes tomorrow and the 3G is off to Mazuma with the money going towards an ipad.

I have to say though, I've only ever had 12 month contracts, but always been desperate for a new phone by the end of it. I got a 3G on an 18 month and have found it really hard to let go and not get a ip4. Hence the ipad. I HAVE to have one or the other. I think this speaks volumes about the iphone/ipad.

Im getting temped again by the Desire, I too was out for a iphone after first considering the Desire, then a jailbroken 3gs and then changed my mind to an iphone 4, but all the problems the phone is having, plus Apple dont really look like they are gonna sort it out (they havent even admitted the problem), plus the price, plus it aint that far ahead tech wise & no flash video support. Im confused lol if I get a iphone 4 it would have to be white so Im lucky its not available yet. With the Desire I also think that I wouldnt worry about it getting scratched as much as I would the ip4 e.g a more rough and rugged phone.

Whens Android 2.2 Froyo coming out officially for Desire again?

Froyo is due out in q3 apparently on the Desire, q3 has started so it could be anytime between July -> End of Sep.

Found another great app today, I have never used last.fm before it's absolutely brilliant , I was using it down the gym earlier instead of listening to the same old music.

Apparently Froyo on the Desire will bring 720p video recording also.

Android is just going to get better and better, pretty much every feature of IOS4 can be done already.

I decided to get my desire off contract as all of the operators are trying to force people into 24 month contracts these days.

I worked the iphone contract to be around £1200 with my early upgrade fee, phone and tarrif when I worked it out, no thanks !!

When my iphone contract runs out shortly I'm moving to a £15 o2 simplicity tariff. I like to have choice.

If I had the iphone 4 I would be scared to use, it looks so delicate. My mate has one and I know I would cry if I dropped it, The desire seems to be more comfortable and natural to hold also.

Was that using wi-fi? I'd be a bit nervous about using last.fm a lot out and about if it wasn't a wi-fi connection due to the data usage

I just recently got an iphone 3g brand new but with the ios4 is freaking slow and I hate the things apple does (not major things like little things i.e. takes 10 years to change ringtone and no alarm clock, need to download an app for that lol). So I was thinking about getting the desire after selling my iphone 3g but confused on either getting it on contract or pay as u go then get a sim only contract?

Also read on another thread that HTC will be releasing new phones (ace etc) so would it be better for me to wait for that or just buy desire?

I changed from the 3g to the Desire and it is a better phone in my opinion, even still better than the i phone 4.

The gym I go to has wireless, I think you could churn up your mobile data allowance quite fast using it also.

Guys I have just a couple of questions does anybody else have free memory around the 40mb point? I don't have many apps installed but seem to be quite low on memory since it should have a lot more.

Also i have my hotmail setup but when I delete email on phone it does not online, i have the delete on server checked, anybody else have this problem?

One last question but lately my desire has been taking ages to shut down and I have even had to take the battery out, anybody else had experience of this problem?

Hi all.

Just a quick question or two here, is the Desire the best HTC phone in the market at the moment? It's just I see so many different HTC phones ones and not being particular up to date with the latest phones it becomes rather confusing!

In add on to the above do they have a specific refresh cycle similar to the iPhone ie June every year a new version? Because while I was tempted by the new iPhone until the issues are sorted I'm looking at other options but obviously don't want to buy if a new update is expected relatively soon.

Thanks!

The Desire is considered top of the current HTC UK range and to be fair, one of the top phones about at the moment. Regards updates, I do not know of specific annual updates, but the Desire has had an update since launch and a major one is due sometime soonish. But this is a good thing and shouldn't put you off getting it. Unless of course you are referring to a new HTC device being released, which there are rumblings of, but won't be anytime soon. I'm referring to software releases.

Hi,

Just to add the Desire is currently considered the top end HTC android device in the UK, it is mega powerful and I'm only starting to learn a lot of things it can do.

Froyo will also add to the life of it as a device massively.

Being honest I don't think I will ever push the Desire to it's limits, HTC no doubt have a new super phone scheduled for Christmas .There will always be something more powerful round the corner, take the plunge you won't regret it
