Phone book (contacts) advice - Hero.

Hi all,

I have had my hero for nearly a week and love it, but I have one MAJOR problem. My contact/phone book.

I put all my SIM contacts from my old sony erricson onto my hero and everyone's names are all over the place, its my fault as on my sony phone I used to have things like () and = and / on and the hero puts this at the top of the contacts section.

Now I have been messing with the Google contacts on the phone and on my PC and I think it seems the best way of doing this, so what I want to know is can i forward all my phone contacts and change them to google??..and then edit them all on my PC so the names read properly and I can input all the email info etc and then send this back to my phone??....

help all !!! as editing everyone on my phone will take for ages...i would prefer to do this on google on my PC and then sync it.

cheers all.

Re: Phone book (contacts) advice - Hero.

Should be perfectly feasible. I haven't synced with google, only outlook, but in theory it should be the same:

Sync the contacts to google, edit them on a pc, resync and bingo. it's done. You may need to look at the conflict settings (i.e. set which wins if the phone and google are different) but it should be a pretty easy process.

If there are any complications you could delete all from the phone after syncing to google, that way when you sync back you are sure to avoid any conflict or duplicate errors.

Re: Phone book (contacts) advice - Hero.

Do you have Google contacts set to sync? From Homepage> Menu>Settings>Data Synchronization>Google>Contacts ticked... Then make sure you have either wifi or mobile internet connected when you tell it to sync.

Failing that you can use outlook. You only need exchange if you want to sync with your work email contacts etc. If you just want to sync with your personal outlook on your own computer then make sure you have installed the HTC Sync program (found on the SD card) to your PC. Then connect the Hero to the pc via the data cable. On the notification panel on the phone choose the sync option, not the mount USB card option. Then on the pc set the options you want (what to sync, what wins in a conflict etc) and sync it.

I've not done this yet, I sync through exchange, so it's a rough guide but it should be fairly easy...

Re: Phone book (contacts) advice - Hero.

Sync updates your contacts once they are already stored on the google servers, it does not copy your contacts to your google account. You can't do it the way already suggested.

There are a few applications on the marketplace that output your contacts to a CSV file on your SD card. I used ExportContacts, it's free and works. You can then copy this CSV file to your PC, and go into googlemail and use the import contacts function there to import the CSV file.

Edit your contacts in googlemail, on your PC, then select sync on your phone to download the contacts from google.

Done.

Re: Phone book (contacts) advice - Hero.

Sorry for the bad advice about the google syncing... I assumed it'd be the same as the others. When I create or edit on the phone the changes are also reflected in outlook via exchange. You live an learn, glad you're getting it sorted.

W910 to htc nero contacts

Hi,

I had the same problem i.e not being able to transfer all my contacts from my W910 to the Hero. There are ways like copying to your sim then insert to your new phone but this only copies over a limited amount of characters. As i do not use outlook and the Sony software installed on your PC does not allow you to save any contacts to a new format i.e CSV, the only way i could do it and keep the full name and numbers was by putting my wife sim card into my Sony phone and then sending the contacts one by one by sms. Luckly she has unlimited text messages bundle so it never costed me anything and all i had to do was save contacts via sms to my HTC nero.

JOb done.

Phil
