Hi,

I recently learnt of this update, but having real trouble installing it. I sync Hero to HTC, follow instructions, get half way through to point where blue bar says it's erased 11% of contacts...and every single time I get error 171: USB connection error. The phone or computer keeps dropping the connection; anyone got any ideas why this might be happening and how to solve it??

Might sound silly but have you tried a different USB port? The ones at the back of your machine can sometimes be more reliable.

What OS are you using?

Also, are you using the latest HTC Sync from their website or the version that comes with the phone?

Yup tried all 3...

Using windows XP home edition version 2002 (had to dig out old windows laptop as ****** HTC don't support Mac users ***!)

Using HTC sync 2.0.4

Hmm, that's really odd then as there should be no problem with XP anf the latest version of HTC Sync

Before you tried to update could you sync normally?

I just found this with a Google seach of "error 171: USB connection error"

The workaround looks like;

Install HTC-sync
Connect the phone with the cable with the pc
Select on the dropdown-screen : sync
Then run the RUU*******.exe on youre PC and follow the steps on youre screen.

In addition to that, to get my phone to sync 1st time I had to power off, connect the phone via USB and then turn it on. I'm using Windows 7 though.

Sorry, please excuse my ignorance...which drop down screen and what does 'Then run the RUU*******.exe on youre PC' mean?

When you connect the phone to the PC it will notify you with an icon at the top of the screen... drag the notification bar down and select sync.

I thing the other bit refers to running the update from your PC once the phone is sync'd.

I can't say for certain as I've been running custom ROMs since before the official update weres released so I've never bothered to try them.

Did you get the update as a download from the HTC or Orange website?

Sorry I didn't get back to you last night... I dozed off quite early!

The file name might be a bit different from the RUU update but the process should be the same.

I assume it's also an .exe file?

yes, it's an exe file.

Looked up the RUU*****.exe, but to no avail.

Going to try someone else's pc...why dont HTC provide updates for macs, ridiculous.

Yeah I must admit I'm stumped with this one... it should just be a case of run HTC sync, connect phone, select sync on phone and then run the update on the PC.

You could try asking in the Hero section of Madaco.com

Failing that there's always custom ROMs which are usually better than the offical ones. You'll get info on those at the above site too.
