Hero and micro SD cards?

on the verge of getting one as it appeals to me more than the iphone does
my main concerns are the memory card, is it a simple case of plugging in a 16Gb or 32Gb card and the phone will format/partition it or is it more complicated than that?

also how much bandwidth do they use as it seems that the 500mb a month allowance that orange give wont be enough

and lastly i take it that the phone can use preffered wifi points ie my house and work etc

sorry for all the ?s in one post

Re: Hero and micro SD cards?

ordered up a Hero last night and decided to go for an 8Gb class 6 card see how that fairs before maybe changing over to a 16 or 32 later

Re: Hero and micro SD cards?

Hi there,

the phone will prepare the SD card when you plug it in.

Regarding data usage; mileage varies. I ran an experiment and found I was on course to be well over the 500MB for a month, but, that was mixed between my own wi-fi (the majority of the time) and the 2G/3G mobile data connection. My findings are here. The bottom line is, if you have a wi-fi connection at home, you should be fine, but there are plenty of methods out there for limiting data usage if you don't have one and find you're creeping closer to your limit.

Re: Hero and micro SD cards?

thanks m8
from the outset i will be using my own wifi and also at work so should be ok, its only when im out and about that it might start creeping up.
but i guess i can restrict that through the apps themselves?

Re: Hero and micro SD cards?

You can restrict how frequently some apps connect, but, with the Hero, HTC have provided a built-in switch widget giving you a one touch method of turning on and off various functions, such as wi-fi, GPS, airplane mode and mobile data. So, if you're away from home and don't want to chew up bandwidth, you can just tap off the mobile data connection and then only turn it on as and when you need it.

Re: Hero and micro SD cards?

Stupid question, but I've never had a web type mobile phone, if you're using ur own (or someone elses ) WiFi you're not using up any of your networks data allowence?

Thinking about a Hero, potentially buying sim free on a cheeper tarif, and is probably best I show my stoopidity and ask these things!

Correct, you're not using any of your allowance.
That's the great thing about wi-fi.

Re: Hero and micro SD cards?

Thought so, cheers for confirming.

And I take it the phone just automatically switches on to an available Wi-Fi connection when one is within range, and uses that rather then the mobile phone network and your data allowence?

In the case of my O2 XDA Stellar which is a rebranded HTC TyTynII you switch on the "WLAN" on the phone and it automatically connects to my home network router...or if you're away from home it will detect wi-fi networks in range and show you if they're secured (needing a password login) or unsecured and offer to connect.
On holiday in Orlando a couple of weeks ago I was sitting in one of the many shopping malls connected to an adjacent cafe's free wi-fi reading the news on the BBCs website while my wife was in a store...likewise anywhere in my hotel...most of the better ones have free wi-fi...it didn't cost a penny on my O2 contract.

Re: Hero and micro SD cards?

Hi there,

In response to your queries:

my main concerns are the memory card, is it a simple case of plugging in a 16Gb or 32Gb card and the phone will format/partition it or is it more complicated than that?

* No it's literally that straightforward, I'd recomend a Class 6 card for speed reasons.

also how much bandwidth do they use as it seems that the 500mb a month allowance that orange give wont be enough

* I had similar concerns but you'll be surprised, with all the places that do WiFI now you probably won't go near the 500mb.

and lastly i take it that the phone can use preffered wifi points ie my house and work etc

* Yes it picks them up automatically.

I'd say go and get one, it's a great phone. Make sure you do the RAM upgrade too, makes all the difference.

I also recommend this app, which switches wi-fi on and data off when you're within range of a designated wi-fi network.

Y5 - Battery Saver v1.2.0 Application for Android | Tools

When you leave the WLAN, it switches data back on and turn's wi-fi off, helps save some battery life.

Re: Hero and micro SD cards?

Brilliant, thanks for the replies, and sorry for hijaking the original thread a bit!

Is good to see another happy customer though, can't wait till my contract finally comes to an end so I can jump in!

Oh, and what does the 'RAM' upgrade do?
