PS3 - Surround sound help please!

Morning all.

I have a PS3 and an old Panasonic surround sound system which has no input really to allow me to connect my PS3 to it sound that I can do 5-1 surround sound.

I was thinking of getting an amp to sit between the two (my speakers that exist for the old system and my PS3).

Has anyone got any ideas?

Cheers in advance!

Re: PS3 - Surround sound help please!

I had a Panasonic SC HT 880 home-cinema kit. In the end I had to replace everything (though I'm still using the speakers at the moment), new receiver, new dvd player, etc, including the subwoofer as the sub has a special cable that is only used with that home cinema kit.

Pain but I'm happy with what I've got now.

Re: PS3 - Surround sound help please!

I'm a complete beginner in this field - but had similar issue to you; some of this might help?

Replaced 'out of box' panasonic DVD + surround sound that went bung with PS3 (to get bluray and keep kids quiet). Knew I had to get receiver and optical connection; eBay success, collected last w/e.

But hadn't realised that PS3 will only output audio to one source at a time; I have HD projector and old TV. Dull.

The then discovered crappy panasonic stuff incl passive subwoofer; need active subwoof with amp. eBay again. Collected last night.

Now struggling to get full 5.1 incl sub woof to work. Blimey; nothing is simple is it! Have used this site to discover audio settings need to be bitmap as using optical rather than HDMI. But still can't figure why not working properly.
More hours tonight. Driving missus nuts

Re: PS3 - Surround sound help please!

If budget is important then look at the Onkyo 506. Richer sounds have got a great offer on these at present.

ONKYO TXSR506-BLK at Richer Sounds - HI-FI Separates, Home Cinema, Speakers, MP3 DVD Portables, Plasma LCD, etc.

A wee bit further up the price scale you could look at the Sony STR-DG820 and the STR-DA2400

SONY STRDG820-BLK at Richer Sounds - HI-FI Separates, Home Cinema, Speakers, MP3 DVD Portables, Plasma LCD, etc.

SONY STRDA2400-BLK at Richer Sounds - HI-FI Separates, Home Cinema, Speakers, MP3 DVD Portables, Plasma LCD, etc.

I'm not sure if the two lower priced ones will decode every available HD audio codec but the 2400 will. All of these amps feature HDMI input which is exactly what your PS3 needs to do it justice. I'm assuming your TV has an HDMI input. You would also be advised to check your speaker ratings against the amps output. I'm sure they'll work but you could find that these amps put out a lot more power than your speakers are designed for. Its your call though.
