Best MPEG-2 codec ?

Hey guys, been messing around with my main HTPC over the last couple of days as I was getting poor 1080P mkv playback using ffdshow ( was using Shark007's Vista codec pack ). Problem was high CPU utilisation (around 90% ish ) giving me lip sync problems etc.
Switch to CoreAVC and my 1080p problems have all gone away...buttery smooth playback with 40-50% cpu usage.

However ive managed to knacker my MPEG-2 playback, and got me thinking ive had problems with a couple of 1080p .ts files recently so got to wondering that the MPEG-2 codec in ffdshow my also not be the the most resource friendly codec out there for this as well.

Does anybody have any suggestions on a top quality MPEG-2 codec to use that will be picked up and utilised by VMC ?

I dont mind spending money on one if its going to be worth it ( as spending on coreAVC obviously was )

Cheers

G

There are 2 mpeg2 codecs in ffdshow. Have you got libmpeg2 selected?

I tried using the alternative libavcodec the other day and it was terrible.

I use a pure copy of FFDSHOW from sourceforge tryouts for all avi playback and works fine with MCE/VMCE/Mediaplayer classic, MP etc...

The MPEG2 codec that comes with Vista is fairly good. Try uninstalling FFDShow and see if that solves your problem

Re: Best MPEG-2 codec ?

THanks guys......I think im getting it slowly

Ive backed off from trying to sort the slight stuttering out on the 1080p .ts files.......ive only got two and everything else plays well now. FFdshow MPEG2 is currently set to off so I assume its using the built in Vista one

What i thought was an MPEG2 problem turns out it could be a media player 11 problem.

Whenever i mount an image using daemon tools lite , and then click play on the virtual DVD drive WMP 11 tries to contact an online store then gives me an error message on a white screen -

"Feature Not Available - This feature is not available from either the currently selected or default online store"

This made me beleive my MPEG2 codec was shafted....but I have just discovered if I then click Play on WMP11 the movie starts ok.......

Ive tried turning off everything i can think of within WMP11 to stop it trying to contact a store ( i have no idea why it is doing this as it doesnt do it on the other pc's in the house ) to no avail

Its driving my crazy
