mov files under directshow

Does anyone have a solution for running mov files under directshow?

I did a google search and stumbled across Quicktime Alternative. Is this solution clean and does it work with DirectShow?

Thanks.

yes, it works pretty well, and as far as I remember its directshow.

Another option would be to use Haali's splitter (known mainly for supporting MKV files) as this also supports MOVs. After that, you just need to make sure you have the correct audio and video codecs to decode the contents of the file.

All you need to do is register the attached MP4Splitter. Run the Reg bat file I've created and this will allow WMP to decode the mov, mp4, m4v movie files you have.

Hope this helps

jwindley,

I've tried Quick Time Alternative now but the installer says quite clearly that it does not include any DirectShow components. After it installs, there is no difference.

Daveybryce,

I installed your file MP4Splitter and it seems to be a step in the right direction.
DirectShow will now split all of my .mov files and some of them are even playable.

My situation at the moment:

I have the following codecs and splitters installed:

CoreAVC
Haali Media Splitter
Koepi's Xvid
MP4 Splitter
all the codecs that come with Vista 64 and extra ones bundled with Cyberlink PowerDVD.

Some of my movs are decoded completely and work well. Some of them decode just the audio, some of them think they are decoding the audio but output nothing.

I did find another Codec called 3ivx that seems to decode audio from the mov files fairly well. It might also decode some of the video as well. However, it is $10.00 to use after a trial period.

Has anyone else tried: QuickTime DirectShow Source Filter: A QuickTime Playback Solution - MediaLooks

I am having trouble specifically with video files from this NASA page:
NASA - NASA High Definition Video

If anyone else has Graphedit, would they mind trying to play the file and letting me know what codecs and being use?

Thanks for the replies so far, they are much appreciated.

I would personally remove Kopies Xvid and install FFDShow.

Here is the link for the latest build.

just select the x64 version and download and install. Disable h264 codec under the FFDShow video config as this will conflict with coreAVC.

If you need any help setting up then I'll be around should you need it.

FFDShow will certainly cater for all of your requirements when it comes to movies and music with some nice post processing properties to enhance SD video.

I am reluctant to install FFDShow as last time I did it, the quality of all my DVD playback was VERY bad, however I am starting to be swayed as I now have a bit more experience with codecs and a much greater understanding of how they all work together.

My plan thus far was to install 32-bit codecs individually for all the media that I wanted to play, as Mediaportal is a 32-bit application.

However...

I understand that Mediaportal uses WMP to playback stuff internally. If I was to change WMP to 64-bit, and then install 64-bit codecs instead, would this work okay?

I might even give FFDShow x64 a try? Is there a 64-bit version of CoreAVC and Haali Mediasplitter?

Thanks.

there is a 64 bit version of Haali, but not coreAVC at the moment, the next release of 2.0 will be 64bit, but CoreAVC have been talking about this release for over 6 months.

I tried 64-bit FFDShow yesterday, on a backup I made before I installed any codecs.

The H.264 and MPEG2 stuff seems to decode fairly well, but .mov files aren't processed at all.

Is there a setting I need to change?

At the moment, I can find no 64-bit Quicktime filters. If I can get it to work on FFDShow or I find another 64-bit codec, I think I will use 64-bit codecs, using FFDShow until CoreAVC is 64-bit.

Otherwise, I I have my 32-bit codecs running sweet as a nut.

H.264 is done by CoreAVC (with Haali installed with it)
MPEG2 is done by built in codecs (With Windows Vista)
XVID is done by Koepi's XVID build
.mov files of EVERY KIND is decoded by Medialooks Quicktime Filters and runs perfectly.

Other than the fact that my codecs are only 32 bits and I am not making the most of my system, I am very happy with my codecs and almost every file is being decoded in directshow perfectly.

Have you managed to get .mov files running with FFDShow?

may I ask why you chose a 64bit system for HTPC use?

I'm using windows 7 so there is no similar comparison really to Vista other than the visual interface.

all I have installed on Win7 x86 is

CoreAVC
FFDShow
mpeg splitter.ax
mp4 splitter.ax
Haali

Everything works perfectly for me. My avi's, divx, mp4, m4v, mov, mkv's all run in direct show thru WMP and my TS/M2TS/AVC files run via MPC-HC.

How long has your current vista version been installed?

I decided to get a 64-bit system so that I could utalise more RAM. Vista 64 can run everything that 32-bit vista can, plus 64-bit applications that can make the most of the extra RAM available.

Vista has been installed (this time round) for about a month and has all latest updates and drivers.

Like I said, I am happy with the way my system decodes all my video, but it would be nice to use 64-bit drivers so that I am getting the most from my system.

FFDShow can decode AVC/H.264 right? Why do you use CoreAVC?

Does MP4Splitter actually decode? Would it be compatable with 64-bit drivers?

Thanks.

I use coreAVC because I bought it and want my moneys worth, also it used to multithread so much better than FFDShow, but not sure what the difference is now.

MP4splitter doesn't decode, it allows the streams held within the MP4, m4v and mov file extension container to be split into video stream and audio stream(s), it's then down to your direct show filters to decode the various streams utilising the right decoder for that type of stream hence where directshow filter meriting comes into play otherwise conflicts can occur.

The mp4splitter I gave you earlier is actually 1 for a 32bit system, I have attached the 64bit one should you wish to use it.

JamesonUK has written a very good info article on decoders/filters/audio etc, it's well worth a read and he has an awful lot of knowledge in this area. So hopefully he might just pop in here and give you some sound advise.

Thanks, I'll try installing FFDShow and Mp4Splitter then when I get home.

I've read Jameson_UKs guide quite a few times now. It's very good but it does not yet cover .mov files and Quicktime codecs. I hope the information gathered in this thread winds its way in there.
