Virgin eyes 150Mb broadband speed
Virgin Media says it will start offering 100 to 150Mbps broadband speeds up to two years before BT completes its rival network.

Yeaah right.. let's see how the 50mb will go anyway.. not a big fan of virgin media..they croooks and hold details on ALL INFO U GO THRU WHILST U CONNECTED TO THE INTERNET AND THEY PASS IT ONTO AUTHORITIES.. im no fraudster but hay i don't need people all up in my bizness.. and they don't allow people to have they're own servers..
i heard o2 is the way to go now... well just until they go all funny like virgin
anyhow
they got much faster broadbands in japan and korea for a long while now..

When virgin upgraded everything to the 20mb the whole system was screwed up for over 2 months.
there was a whole forum created about the problems.
seems they just upgraded speeds without upgrading any hardware to cope with the extra usage. i (and many many many others) were stuck for a couple of months getting less than 2mb..
thing is if all the ISP's start clamping down on downloading of music/films etc like they keep rumouring.. then no one is going to need anything more than 2/4mbps..
we put our 20mb service down recently to 2mb due to all the traffic shaping crap meaning that in the day time you could only max the connection out for around 40mins before being throttled.. we were paying £40 a month for 20mb broadband that could only be used to its potential after 9pm at night.

think yourself lucky 2mbps i think im lucky to get 56k dial up back to watching the the little green bar.

All ISP's hold your details. Regardless of who they are/. O2, BT, Virgin, doesn't matter. Not to mention the fact that everyone in the UK has to use the BT network unless you're on Virgin (even then you still need to cross this network quite often) - Any network you cross, you are using thier equipment to browse the internet or download so they're entitled to know what you're doing.
They do allow servers. I've got more than one running here, they just wont give you a static IP unless you pay for a business account (oh, guess what, all other ISP's do that too...)
Maybe people should do thier homework before making sweepng comments?

Other isps will give you a static address on a resi account. With dyndns you don't really need it anyway.
Some ISPs will give you multiple static IPs on a single residential account - this has potential, for those that don't have a convenient static address at work....

None of those mentioned by our friend above will though. BT Virgin and O2 will only give you static on a Business account. Dynamic DNS is all well and good but most hosting/providers will charge as much as the business account itself to set up. Anyways I digress. My point was that slagging off Virgin on unfounded and quite patently untrue assumptions wasn't needed. In all honesty they can all be as bad as each other.

Basic dyndns is free - so I register for a name, set this up on my router with my account details
I then go into a domain that I own, to the management page provided by the company I bought the domain from, and change records to point to the CNAME of my dyndns domain - if I change the @ record, it should redirect everything, for free. If you're having services hosted elsewhere, why do you need a static IP?
There are plenty of ways to do trickery with dyndns, and the dns records for your domains, so that not having a static allocated address doesn't matter too much - but it's nice to have more than one ip address to play with too....

Which is still faster than the competition and the top speed is not capped .... Yet

virgins top speed does get ''traffic shaped'' after you have downloaded just 3gig in the afternoon.. i.e. you have used your connection at top speed for 30mins..
(the morning limit is 6gig)
its the main reason we ditched it when the STM came in force.

Nope that's the 20mb the 50Mb is unlimited. Even on the 20mB you only get cut to 5Mb which is an actual 5Mb not up to so it's still faster than most ADSL providers.

I'm a heavy user on a 10mb line and my speed restriction between 4-9pm is still faster than my mates 8mb BT line!
