Post Film geeks hate festive flicks, survey says

It seems that hardcore movie buffs have little time for the usual festive films if research commissioned by Jameson Irish Whiskey Cult Film Club, in conjunction with ShortList, is to be believed.

Respondents indicated that they would much rather watch cult films like Blade Runner (21 per cent), Fight Club (15 per cent) or The Big Lebowski (14 per cent) on TV during the festive season, rather than  read more »

Re: Film geeks hate festive flicks, survey says

I'm a hardcore movie buff (with a degree and everything) and I religiously watch 'Home Alone', 'Miracle on 34th Street' and the like every year. This survey's credibility was utterly lost on me when I saw that 'The Snowman' was in the "turn-offs" list. If you think that is a bad film then you're simply not a movie buff.

Agreed! I religiously watch the snowman every year my Christmas wouldn't be the same without it!

Your all right. If you are a movie buff then you should watch and respect any films thrown at you . There should be no HATE about any film at all.
One of my favourite films at christmas has got to be
National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation with Chevy Chase. Its a christmas must.

Re: Film geeks hate festive flicks, survey says

I actually agree with the survey to a small extent. I can't stand musicals so a good chunk of those films would be on my avoid list too and the snowman i don't watch because i find it too melancholic and just not Christmassy enough.

For me, Christmas just isn't the same without A Christmas Carol (either Alastair Simm or the muppets) or Home Alone. I've got the rest of the year to watch non festive films.

When asked to name their top TV turn-off for Christmas, one-in-five of the respondents plumped for the musical Annie (21 per cent), with The Sound of Music (19 per cent) and Home Alone (15 per cent) following close behind.
Philistines!

I need to find The Snowman again, haven't seen it since I was little. I heard the DVD had been cropped to 16:9 so passed up on it.

The survey also revealed that [...] Uma Thurman is the film actress most respondents would like to be caught under the mistletoe with (31 per cent).
What!!

I recently bought The Snowman/Father Christmas (Raymond Briggs special double edition) in Tesco for a few pounds and can confirm it is in original 4:3 format. For reference this is the version:link

I also have "The Snowman special edition" which is cropped to 16:9 and the poorer for it.

Frankly, with DVD you can watch any film whenever you want.
The point of a Christmas movie for me is to entertain the whole family. If it can hold a child's attention and put a smile on your face at the end it has done it's job.
If it can keep the grandparents from falling asleep after Christmas dinner it is truly exceptional.
The article's "worst list" is a much better choice for Christmas movies in my opinion, with the previously mentioned films and of course the great Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.
At the top of my "to watch" list this year is the new Wallace & Grommit short on BBC1.
And to Quote Raymond Briggs' Father Christmas, "Happy bloomin' Christmas to you an' all".

Cheers

So far I've watched A Christmas Carol, It's a Wonderful Life and still have The Nightmare Before Christmas to watch once again. I watch on DVD, you can't trust the schedules.

Re: Film geeks hate festive flicks, survey says

Well technically there's Christmas movies (ie movies about xmas) and there's movies that are always on a christmas (chitty chitty bang bang).

I love Xmas movies and faithfully watch the following because there about xmas:
National Lampoons christmas vacation
Miracle on 34th Street
Christmas Story

Absolutely hate musical and get sick of watching Mary Poppins etc...

Mind you,I dont actually like many of the films in the poll's Top 10

Re: Film geeks hate festive flicks, survey says

pretty much agree with that

I dont think they mean the same bad santa as me

Rated R for pervasive language, strong sexual content and some violence

Possibly a record for a Christmas film, the word "f***" and its variations are used 147 times while "s***" appears 34 times amid a total of 243 "profanities"

Hysterical film

snowman has to go down as not only the top 10 worst crimbo film but in the top 5 worst film every made
